Shocked by my own outrage to see Gilmore Girls get such a low ranking. I wonder if its cultural value got depreciated by AYITL, or maybe by the over-inflated Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — I would have expected it to end up in the 40 to 70 range. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

I think one of the issues with the NYT rural revival piece is that it's moving back and forth between different definitions of country music — a notoriously slippery genre to define — without ever acknowledging what it's doing.

This is so, so dumb and shortsighted of Vox. I read pretty much everything Constance writes. She's a brilliant writer and big-picture thinker who gives popular culture the analysis it deserves. Her inbox had better be full of job offers, stat.

Vox killed off the culture section slowly and painfully, and my hat's off to Constance for all the amazing work she managed to create despite dwindling support. Constance is a wonderful colleague and an incredible critic doing necessary work. If you're a very smart editor you'll hire her post-haste.

So there's an interesting debate happening in publishing that I think people outside the industry don't know about. When kids' reading scores started going down, so did sales of middle-grade books. But the industry disagrees on the cause and effect here. www.vox.com/culture/4996...

I have seen some people arguing that the sex purge movie premise is inherently conservative and anti-sex, and this is driving me nuts. The driving force behind such a ridiculous concept is that restrictions make things sexier. It's an excuse to get Darcy's hand clench into the 20th century.

You guys. Emily Wilson is correct about Nolan's Odyssey: it leaves behind the themes that make the original work pleasurable. There is no need to be defensive if you like the movie. It's a perfectly enjoyable film, which Wilson also says in her essay.

Nolan fully justifies his reading of The Odyssey as a story about trauma, but I miss all the pleasure he ditches in the process — the wit and the sensuality, and especially Odysseus's delight in his own cleverness. It's a reasonable adaptation but it sacrifices a lot.

For your convenience, the Pride and Prejudice live-posting super-thread 📚
A drawing of Elizabeth Bennet, a lovely young woman with her long hair tied up nearly under a ribbon and wearing what is most likely a neo-classically inspired dress, looking pensive, two letters in her hand. Meanwhile Darcy, a handsome but stern-looking fellow, looks longingly at her. Also there is me, a little gremlin in big round glasses, skulking about in the background and hoping that they kiss.

The accompanying text reads “Trung reads Pride and Prejudice for the first time, somehow.”
