If the environment artist wanted the water in that scene to have a blown-out white reflection, they could have easily achieved that. But they wanted the water off that dock to look dark and murky, not like someone's instagram vacation shots from Ibiza.

On the non-face examples, the DLSS5 shots look simply worse – the main effect of DLSS5 seems to be to blow the image out, obliterating the original tone mappingand setting the contrast values to "migraine"

The thing that sucks most about DLSS 5 is that Neural Rendering can be cool, nVidia even showcased using it to basically decompress textures and the like on the fly, offloading it from the CPU and saving disc space. Yet this is how they choose to sell it because it's not a usecase unique to games.

the moment DLSS stops being about pixel counts and becomes about injecting lighting and other artistic details that were not intended to begin with is the moment i'm out dude. felt like it was only a matter of time given NVIDIA but it feels truly dire as someone who has otherwise enjoyed DLSS.

This is good to see. I've been driving a rental the past couple weeks (was in an accident - but just bumper damage, thankfully) and it's a VW with 90% touch driven controls. It's OK enough most of the time but if you need to quickly adjust/check something, it really sucks.
