Ed's not even sure that he'll be able to sleep knowing Stede's right there, but he closes his eyes and listens to the sounds of the waves lapping
against the hull. Against all odds he's just starting to drift when Stede whispers into the darkness.
"Ed?"
"Yeah, mate," Ed mumbles back.
"The whole time?"
It takes Ed a minute to grasp what he's asking.
For his mind to trip back through the evening to their earlier conversation.
I can't believe you were reading these and you still didn't realise / was flirting with you the whole time.
"Yep," Ed sighs. "Thought I was being pretty
fucking obvious actually. Kinda insulting."
"God," Stede sighs too. "I'm such an idiot."

Ed doesn't say anything because, yeah.
"I'm so sorry, Ed," Stede murmurs into the darkness. "I wish I'd known. I wish I'd been paying more attention. I feel like I've missed so much."
Ed hates it. Hates how sad Stede sounds, like he's missed his chance. Because he hasn't. That's why Ed is still here, isn't it? Yes, he's hurt and his anger hasn't fully gone away, but he stil... It's not like Ed wants Stede to leave again. And Ed certainly doesn't want to leave, even if the crew all hate him. He wants this. More than he's ever wanted anything, probably.
"Well," Ed starts. He takes a deep breath.
"Maybe you'll notice next time."
Stede's quiet for a moment before he murmurs
"Next time?"
"Yeah. Maybe."
Ed can practically hear Stede's smile. Feels like
the dark in the cabin gets significantly lighter because of it.
"I hope so,
" Stede breathes.
