Just learned one of the stories I featured in a past MicroVerse spec flash roundup was not written by a human, but rather generated by an LLM. The story won a HUGE cash prize. Goddammit. Removing it from my rec list and website. Seriously, friends, we have to step up our game.

Because the alternative means we all become so insecure and afraid of critique and being wrong that we're afraid to even try and make something better than what a glorified calculator manages to sludge out.

I hope this means that humans will get better at communicating. That human error itself becomes a valuable tool by which we communicate and learn to better ourselves and each other.

InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
So. Beating on magazines for not 'being better' is not the issue. Every magazine that takes down an AI story is making a promise to work even harder, to train even harder, to take _more_ time in their allotted hours on this earth to _try_ make sure that it doesnt happen again.
110
InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
I very much doubt any of these AI stories get championed by slush readers. I very much doubt they have a slusher passing a note up with "Please, oh please, oh _pleeeeease_" but I bet another story in the same issue will have. Because the time saved from one will have been spent on another.
110
InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
The writing is objectively bad. It makes no sense. The story moved forward to an ending, yet it is directionless and builds to what seems a poignantly pithy nothing ending, it requires absolutely no further input or communication from the author because there is no author input to begin with.
120
InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
So. AI. _Looks_ like a story. In a pile of 11 other amazing human crafted stories it will always stand out to tired, anxious eyes as 'no gaps, no big typos, nothing stands out.' Despite the fact it has no character development, no stakes, no theme, no background. Smooth-the appearance of polished.
120
InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
So everyone, for good and solid and kind reasons, errs on the side of 'the less editorial work we have to do, the more editorial work we can do.' (Because time is literally the resource _everyone_ is spending here, from author to reader and every step in between)
110
InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
It's is not often done. At least in my experience. It's too hard to know how someone will react to critique, or how much money and resources (because time is the BIGGEST resource drain in this space) it will take to make this story feel smooth and complete and slot in with the table of contents.

InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
With just _one_ problem. Something is missing. Someone is missing. There's a continuity error, or a plot hole, or the pacing is just a nudge off. Which means reaching out to the author, communicating with the unknown, not quite signing the contract until the problem can be fixed. Months could pass.

InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
They will read dozens of stories at a time, hoping to add value to the magazine that they are passionately working for, usually for free. And they will _frequently_ see stories they adore. That they want to champion and push through all the way to publication....

InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
The resources that sustained and celebrated SFF the so called "golden" and "silver" age simply arent here anymore and the _vast_ majority of work done in the space is at-cost. Slush readers are looking for quality content, that is their whole job.

InkFoundry @inkfoundry.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
🧵 I DON'T think it's malice, cowardice, or the tendency towards slop that sunk AI's claws into our markets. The problem ISN'T that published fiction doesn't hit hard or doesnt tell good stories.

Some thoughts on this. There's an old saying that springs to mind: the future is already here, but it's unevenly distributed. * awareness of AI tells in fiction. How widespread was this knowledge two years ago? It's still not as widespread as it needs to be within slushpiles
