Love Michael Hurley, and this is a great appreciation. "The Tea Song" is always a mid-fall afternoon for me. "Werewolf Song" also a great one from First Songs.

John Crowley, Endless Things
“What if the hope then was that a story told about that wonderful and hopeful marriage might change its nature backward, and make it far more wonderful; what if language of the right kind, describing that more wonderful thing, could be powerful enough to change altogether what it described, even when what it described was something that has already happened? Gematria: the alteration of preexistant things by the alteration of the letters that constitute their true names, which first brought them into being.
And then to go on from there along the new way." - John Crowley, Endless Things

Wendell Berry, “September 2“
September 2 (Wendell Berry)

In the evening there were flocks of nighthawks passing southward over the valley. The tall sunflowers stood, burning on their stalks to cold seed, by the still river. And high up the birds rose into sight against the darkening clouds. They tossed themselves among the fading landscapes of the sky like rags, as in
abandonment to the summons their blood knew.
And in my mind, where had stood a garden straining to the light, there grew an acceptance of decline. Having worked, I would sleep, my leaves all dissolved in flight.

Kragg deals with all the unwanted things in the universe, the operative for the final disposal unit. Until one day something arrives that is inexplicable. Surely someone, somewhere wants this? Flotsam by @slharris.bsky.social
Kragg cleared one nostril, then the other, straightened his back with a satisfying clack, and shoveled another load of books, bullets, toys, and a wedding ring or two into the empty heart of existence. The objects glittered briefly in the blackness like stray ashes and were gone,. He grabbed the push-broom with knotty hands and began to sweep in the remnants that had escaped the shovel: mateless socks, family photos, trading cards, pencil nubs, a damp pile of Pogs–dancing for a second like dandelion seeds before winking out in the void. Kragg grunted in something like approval at the momentary emptiness, wiped the cold sweat off his forehead, then turned back to the big machine standing silent before the Himalayan expanse of things unremembered, uncared for, unneeded, unwanted. He jumped in the cab and began to lower the front loader to push the next pile forward.

Then he saw the boy.

Flotsam
