Impressive! I wonder how common these kinds of videos will become - we are also seeing a remarkable (and horrifying) influx of videos showing buildings shaking and then collapsing. (And of course, figuring out what's real and what is fake is an increasing problem.)

Somewhere deep in past of the internet I did some analysis on a super typhoon that hit station I39PW right after I was on island as part of the maintenance team. If I remember correctly I even made sounds out of the data. I'll try to find it.

⚒️ 🧪 A M7.8 earthquake occurred beneath the southern Philippines today; the USGS estimates that 1 million people experienced severe shaking; footage shows collapsed buildings. The earthquake occurred within the east-dipping subducting plate that underlies the island.

Twenty years ago, an eruption occurred in Alaska that had a profound impact on my career: the 2006 eruption of Augustine Volcano. At the time, I was an undergraduate at WWU studying geology, with no long-term plans, taking things one quarter at a time.
