We’re going about this the wrong way.

To my fellow people in Gen Alpha and younger part of Gen Z,

Millennials are going to be better than you. Historically, this has been the generational mood of “We’re older and more experienced therefore we know more. You kids get off my lawn.” kind of vibe. This time though, it’ll be actual fact. We’re going to be more knowledgeable, better read, more creative, have quicker wits, and be more tech savvy than those younger than us. Why? Because you let ChatGPT and AI do your thinking for you.

Knowledge and Skill are some of the most powerful things you can give to yourself. Both require a considerable amount of time and or practice to develop, and you need both to excel in any given area of human life. Why you are willfully outsourcing your own development to lying robots is really confusing to people with knowledge and skill, ie. the majority of people older than you and the smart ones within your generation.

I would say it’s sad to see the increasing reliance on AI by the younger generation, but honestly, I’m laughing at you. “This dude can’t even write a paragraph without help from AI! Aww, poor baby… You need ai to write your code for you? Everyone’s doing it, might as well hop on the smooth brain train with ‘em!” With slight exaggeration, I’m in hysterics whenever I see photos or screenshots of student worksheets and a short response answer starts with: “As an ai language model…” It takes a special kind of stupid to physically write that and not realize what’s actually being said.

We all understand laziness and the desire to get things done quicker and easier. The problem is, lazy people don’t assert that their skills are well-developed or even useful. They’re well aware of their own capacity both mentally and physically in a given area of expertise. AI users on the other hand, won’t shut up about how their “prompting skills” are unmatched, as if asking ChatGPT to jerk off for them will give them huge loads to show for it. They become a nuisance, a skill-less individual who is too ignorant to realize their lack of aptitude for anything.

You may not realize it yet Gen Z and Alpha, but AI is useless for learning. You’ll develop minimal knowledge and zero skills when you turn to an LLM. You’ve been sold on the biggest and shiniest vial of snake oil in human history, and you’re guzzling it down trading away your wits for it. Its capacity is no greater than what humans have been doing for centuries. Everything ChatGPT can do, humans can, have, and will do it better with an astronomically lower rate of having a random stroke.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m still in your corner young folk! AI is encroaching on our personal lives and workspaces too, but we’re all out of school/college and much less inclined to turn to an AI for anything because we developed our knowledge and skill before LLMs were a thing. Work is hard, learning is hard, life is hard, but it’s worth doing because you’re the one living it. You will find enjoyment from learning and doing things yourself. This small opinion piece is meant to shame some of you, but it’s coming from a good place… from someone who doesn’t want to see the next generation grow up to be stupid. And for those of you who still don’t care, enjoy being mid for the entirety of your life. Maybe you can ask ChatGPT to be fulfilled for you.
