Facebook has just offered me this "inspiring quote": "“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” The (alleged) source of the quote could literally not be more ironic.

Thing is, it feels on Bluesky like EVERYONE knows about this Unbound scandal now. But they don't. In the grand scheme of things - the grand scheme of UK book lovers, even - what this publisher has done to its authors is still relatively little-known. Coverage like this is an important step.

I have now severed all my connections with the business I co-founded, which is wretchedly sad, but I resigned on a point of principle and hope that some of you at least will understand why that decision was the only one I could make. I'm more sorry than words can say. (11/12)

Ever since I joined Waterstones as a bookseller in 1987, this industry has been my life. I have always put books and their authors first and I will continue to do that. (10/?)

There will be speculation in coming weeks about how and why Unbound has failed. That is right and proper. There is, in particular, a great deal to be said about businesses that over-rely on external investors--a vulnerability that has proved near-fatal in Unbound's case. (9/?)

Imogen Howson @imogenhowson.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
The company's current position is morally and financially unacceptable. We started Unbound to offer an alternative to the traditional publishing model, to offer a better, fairer deal for authors. That starts with paying them on time. If there is any money in the business, it should go to them. (8/?)

Imogen Howson @imogenhowson.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
I made that choice because I could not countenance taking another penny from a business that no longer prioritised paying its authors. The other departing staff felt the same. We all feel let down and devastated on the authors' behalf. (7/?)

None of us have other jobs to go to. In my own case, I left with no equity, no notice period, no tangible reward to show for 14 years of work, except of course for the only reason I'm in this business--the wonderful books we have published. (6/?)

Imogen Howson @imogenhowson.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
...not least because it happened too late for us to seek an alternative. The May 30th payments scheduled for both the payment plans and the end of May profit share would not be paid. That is why I resigned last Friday, joined by seven senior members of the Boundless team. (5/?)

Imogen Howson @imogenhowson.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
The whole team signed up to the payment plan we issued. And, with justifiable reluctance, most authors did, too. The revelation last week that the investment money we had been promised in May was going to fall substantially short was a devastating blow... (4/?)

Imogen Howson @imogenhowson.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
Unbound was founded on the principle that authors ARE the business. I still believe that. Unbound's decision to enter administration in March was traumatic and painful, but it at least offered a route for our authors to be paid, albeit over an extended period of time. (3/?)

Imogen Howson @imogenhowson.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
Anyone who knows me will realise, I hope, that this apology is heartfelt and sincere. Unbound's well-publicised financial troubles notwithstanding, there can be no viable publishing business without a credible plan for paying its authors. Authors must come ahead of all other business creditors.(2/?)

An Extra Bad Writing Take.

“A genre romance book doesn’t have to end happily.”

YES.
IT.
DOES.

Can we seriously stop with this nonsense? All genres have conventions; this is ours. If it doesn’t have a HEA or a HFN, IT’S NOT ROMANCE GO AWAY.

TL;DR

Using the Oxford or serial comma is not a matter of correct/incorrect punctuation, but of style, and style is personal, and therefore always optional.

For consistency, the Oxford comma is often used throughout a book, even where it’s not needed to prevent ambiguity. On the occasions where it creates ambiguity, style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style recommend rewording that particular sentence, as below:

“Chastity gazed at her lovers, the army of the dead, and the dragon king.”
(Um, Oxford comma, all the members of the army of the dead are her lovers? Isn’t that, well, overkill?)

“Chastity gazed at her lovers and the army of the dead and the dragon king.”
(Phew, still just the four lovers. Chastity knows her limits.)

However, this is still a matter of style. If you’re with a publisher, they will probably impose their house style, which may or may not use the Oxford comma, on your book.

But if you’re self-publishing, and you want to generally avoid the Oxford comma, only using it to prevent ambiguity, or if you want to avoid it entirely, rewording sentences instead, then that’s perfectly correct.

The Oxford comma is the comma before the final item in a list. It comes before “and” in sentences such as the one below:

“This romantasy book is full of morally grey men, dragons, and sex-magic.”

It’s often used in order to prevent ambiguity, as you can see from the two versions of the sentence below:

“In this romantasy, the heroine, Chastity, falls in love with the dragon-shifter twins, Fhlame and Fhyre.”
(With no Oxford comma, this could mean she’s in love with just two people (a pair of twins named Fhlame and Fhyre) or with four.)

“In this romantasy, the heroine, Chastity, falls in love with the dragon-shifter twins, Fhlame, and Fhyre.”
(Ah: thank you, Oxford comma! You’ve made clear that she’s in love with a pair of unnamed dragon-shifter twins and with two further people called Fhlame and Fhyre. Well, it is romantasy. Good for her.)
