Today's my first day of medical school! Feels neat to be able to say that I'm a med student now 😁

It's really not. Every politician who shows up at trans march gets booed, mooned, heckled. It's been that way forever. Trans march is a radical event for trans people, not politicians who want the spotlight. If they care about trans people, just do good work in office and let us have our space.

I agree, I don't mean to denigrate their importance. I just think it's easier for Repubs to understand the value of STEM research when it can be turned into a valuable product or treatment. Cutting NSF funding in half is terrible for everyone, and it's a fraction of the cost of the Iran war.

I don't think it's reversible at this point. We stripped funding from a generation of early career scientists. My friends who wanted to continue doing academic research have mostly left the country. Not taking social sciences, I mean people working on future cancer treatments.

Heartbreaking when you see a patient for DKA symptoms, check their records and see that they get admitted to the hospital every 10 weeks for DKA.

Really glad to see Republicans take the doctor shortage seriously by uh... capping the amount of federal loans med students can take out to a level below what the average med student takes out.

I agree that the government should not be using signal to share information to external groups though, and they definitely should not be automatically sharing information from every single police interaction.

Imogen Heapsort @imogenheapsort.bsky.social · 18/06/2025
Read the article again, it's a little confusingly worded. They knowingly had someone from DHS in that group. DHS is now working on mass deportations, which is how ICE found out. The problem isn't with signal, the problem is that they were sharing law enforcement information to a group chat.

They were publishing all arrest info to a signal group that was being watched by someone at homeland security. Signal is not at fault here.

Expect price increases and shortages for: consumer electronics, apparel and footwear, home goods / toys, and food / snacks (like fruits and vegetables we import from Mexico off-season, avocados, mangos).

Wish I could find the interview I listened to yesterday (NPR?), but an import-export specialist said we shouldn't have toilet paper shortages this time, but export rates are dropping like they were during covid. He expects us to notice shortages with back-to-school supplies in June.

For 75 years, every time any U.S. state has requested epidemiologic assistance (an “Epi-Aid”), CDC sent disease detectives. Now, Wisconsin has asked for help to address newly discovered lead poisoning in Milwaukee. But all CDC experts in lead poisoning were just fired.

Only 79.5% of children in Idaho got the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccine! I'm internally screaming! There are so many great things that RFK could focus on for public health, like our crappy food labeling, banning misleading ads or pharmaceutical ads altogether. Why are we doing this???

Imogen Heapsort @imogenheapsort.bsky.social · 01/04/2025
Relatedly, we are now seeing infant deaths from pertussis (whooping cough), a preventable disease that had its first vaccine licensed in 1914. We've been giving a combined vaccine (DTaP) since the 1940s but parents are increasingly getting exemptions from this and vaccine activists are targeting it.

Peter Marks’s resignation letter. Everyone should read this.

Sara Brenner, MD, MPH
Acting Commissioner of Food and Drugs
U.S. Food and Drug Administration
10903 New Hampshire Avenue

Dear Dr. Brenner:
It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from FDA and retire from federal service as Director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research effective April 5, 2025. I leave behind a staff of professionals who are undoubtedly the most devoted to protecting and promoting the public health of any group of people that I have encountered during my four decades working in the public and private sectors. I have always done my best to advocate for their well-being and I would ask that you do the same during this very difficult time during which their critical importance to the safety and security of our nation may be underappreciated.
Over the past years I have been involved in enhancing the safety of our nation's blood supply, in advancing the field of cell and gene therapy, and in responding to public health emergencies. In the last of these, during the COVID-19 pandemic I had the privilege of watching the vision that I conceived for Operation Warp Speed in March 2020 in collaboration with Dr. Robert Kadlec become a reality under the leadership of HHS Secretary Azar and President Trump due to the unwavering commitment of public servants at FDA and elsewhere across the government. At FDA, the tireless efforts of staff across the agency resulted in remarkably expediting the development of vaccines against the virus, meeting the standards for quality, safety, and effectiveness expected by the American public. The vaccines undoubtedly markedly reduced morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 in the United States and elsewhere. Many of these same individuals applied learnings from the pandemic during a flawless response helping…ongoing multistate measles outbreak that is particularly severe in Texas reminds us of what happens when confidence in well-established science underlying public health and well-being is undermined.
Measles, which killed more than 100,000 unvaccinated children last year in Africa and Asia owing to pneumonitis and encephalitis caused by the virus, had been eliminated from our shores. The two-dose measles, mumps, rubella vaccine regimen (MMR) using over the past decades has a remarkably favorable benefit-risk profile. The MMR vaccine is 97% or more effective in preventing measles following the two-dose series, and its safety has been remarkably well studied. Though rarely followed by a single fever-related seizure, or very rarely by allergic reactions or blood clotting disorders, the vaccine very simply does not cause autism, nor is it associated with encephalitis or death. It does, however, protect against a potential devasting consequence of prior measles infection, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which is an untreatable, relentlessly progressive neurologic disorder leading to death in about 1 in 10,000 individuals infected with measles. Undermining confidence in well-established vaccines that have met the high standards for quality, safety, and effectiveness that have been in place for decades at FDA is irresponsible, detrimental to public health, and a clear danger to our nation's health, safety. and security.
In the years following the pandemic, at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research we have applied the same unwavering commitment to public health priorities to the development of cell and gene therapies to address both hereditary and acquired rare diseases. During my tenure as Center Director we have approved 22 gene therapies, including the first gene therapy ever to be approved in the United States. However, we know that we must do better to expedite the development of treatments for those individual suffering from any one of the thousan…

If only the hundreds of thousands of children who died before the vaccine or their parents were around to speak to this. People don't understand how horrific and insanely transmissible measles was because we vanquished it 60 years ago.

We usually tell people that 10 = the worst pain you've ever felt, not necessarily the worst pain you can imagine. I find it more useful to ask how it compares to other pain in the past, as the "quality" of the pain can tell us something, like if it feels like kidney stones they've had before.

I basically consider 7-10 to be the same tbh since different people use the pain scale differently. I am also autistic and think the pain scale is kinda dumb though somewhat useful. Charting is hard and we average about three patients / hour (with like a dozen patients at once), mistakes happen :(

I can tell a patient is autistic because you ask what their pain is from 1-10 while they're in excruciating pain from kidney stones and they're like "this is entirely subjective, how would I even know what a 10 feels like if I've never experienced it?" and every neurotypical person just tells you 11
