It's already been an amazing week for scathing obituaries at the NYT, and it's only Tuesday morning

Humor is a skill, and one that’s somewhat esoteric. AI reliance is insidious. It starts with using it innocently as a tool, and then your instinct becomes to use it first and you lose the skill to lookup and parse information yourself. I am troubled by how fast this seems to happen. 9/10

Today in me being insufferable: A number of the zines and band posters inside that record shop, uh, belonged to me. The HF production design team borrowed* them from myself and other Chicago music scene/record store folks. The More You Know etc [*no I didn't get paid lol, I did it For the Culture]

This is the push notification of the year. The only question is whether Thi*l believes he has identified the Antichrist, or believes he is the Antichrist. Remember, Thi*l bought V*nce the Ohio Republican senate primary campaign that guaranteed V*nce a Senate seat from which he could become VP.

The word "lede" is unique in that its only use by anyone is to correct the spelling of someone saying "bury the lead". I've lived four decades on this earth in some real nerd spaces and no one ever uses the word in any other context. It should be given an award for its service to pedants.

you could make a pretty good start power mapping any given American city or area just getting a list of all the construction companies and seeing who they give money to or get contracts from

We never imagined how far that dream would travel, into homes, into hearts, into the way generations imagined what we could still become. In a world that often feels as divided as ever, maybe that's exactly why we need it now: a reminder that unity was always the point.

The NYT published a masterfully passive aggressive bullet point list in The Morning today, subtly emphasizing the fascist approach to art: What they like, they steal, and what they dislike or don't understand, they condemn and eliminate.
Screen shot from the New York Times link blog The Morning, dated September 8, 2026

Headline:

Art

Body text, three bullet points with embedded links to articles:

An 18th-century painting stolen by a high-ranking Nazi during World War II and spotted last year in a real-estate listing must be returned to the owner's descendants, a judge in Argentina ruled.

Thieves stole three artworks from a Renoir museum at the artist's last home in the south of France.

David Rubenstein, the chairman of the Kennedy Center ousted by Trump, has bought the abstract sculpture called "Blue" that was removed from its grounds last week.

This is what "freedom" meant to Bob Jones III and Jerry Falwell Sr: the right to declare any attempt to counter the legacy & practice of racism to be the only "real" racism, and to destroy or capture federal power as a method of revenge for feds sanctioning their institutions for racist practices.

@apstylebook.com: The term “hallucinate” is an inaccurate, industry-friendly term that should be banned when reporting news about AI fabrications. It has been shown that AI lies and cheats to please its taskmaster. It’s not an accidental, innocent, ha-ha, drug-induced mistake.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Title: The Cyclops discusses his part in Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

Panel 1.
The cyclops wanders across his island, talking to the audience
"Most directors these days just use computers, so I appreciate that chris sailed the entire crew to a mythical island to shoot my scenes on film."

Panel 2.
He continues as he climbs the hill.
"I wasn't going to do it: The young people are all so down on cannibalism. But I called up Homer and he said "Are you an idiot? This is Hollywood money, not poetry royalties!"

Panel 3.
He sits on a rock and looks out to sea.
"So I got to meet Matt Damon, which was cool."
