Diedrich: My thirst is unquenchable. Slaughter is the only vector yet found by which the beauty of life can truly be known. Thousands must perish. Fabio: My God I never thought of it like that! The beauty of this beast's genius is matched only by the brilliance of his perfect jawline!

My 9. I find it extremely difficult to narrow it down at the best of times. My list of favorites is like 20 or 30+ games long No particular order, these are the games that influenced me most when I was younger.

The boxart of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Kingdom Hearts II, Persona 4, Super Mario 64m, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Mega Man ZX, Chrono Trigger, Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, Xenoblade Chronicles.

I will say though on the flipside, the recent trend of jrpgs that feel the need to 'solve' overworld encounters by putting in half-assed action combat mechanics that basically amount to a lot of button mashing and running around between the actual turn-based combat is something I dont super like.

020

IlycitActivity 🏳️‍⚧️ Ilyse @ilycitactivity.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

I feel like a lot of people forget in this conversation that Chrono Trigger both A; doesn't have random encounters and B; solves for 'forced combat at regular intervals' by just having some motherfuckers jump you in the woods, sometimes. One of the most critically beloved jrpgs of all time.

also I think any game with enemies on the field needs to have Problems walking around that will absolutely ruin your day if you run into them enemies on the field can be really fun! but it requires devs to see it as an actual mechanic rather than simply a way for players to not play the game

Like yet again I don't know if the random part really has much bearing on the overhead arrow. It's not the randomness that accomplishes this, is it? It's the 'regular intervals' part.

051

IlycitActivity 🏳️‍⚧️ Ilyse @ilycitactivity.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

This is all also true, but I balk at the notion that random encounters are THE undisputed and perfected method of addressing this design problem.

020

IlycitActivity 🏳️‍⚧️ Ilyse @ilycitactivity.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

To me this is such a weird thing to say, because the 'random' in 'random encounters' doesn't really imply anything about the frequency or length of encounters, does it?
