So much solidarity, it feels like we were decluttering for two solid years before and after the move, including one memorable occasion when we booked the Salvos to pick up a sofa and they couldn’t park so they went away again

This is an extraordinary example of a liberal writer laundering far right politics. The property the author drives past is notorious for far right messaging — the banner 'Centrelink is Evil' likely refers to the belief, spread by the Telegraph, that "Muslims" are rorting it to fund terrorism.

A banner along the Pacific Highway speaks volumes about why some communities are turning to One Nation
‘Centrelink is evil’ isn’t a call to slash welfare payments – it’s a sign people are frustrated about the ability to access government support

This BUT now I’ve read Lorraine Daston’s HISTORY OF RULES I can say that only algorithmic rules bypass “relationships, memory and judgement”. An older tradition of “thick rules” embed human sense-making, discretion, precedent, contextualised interpretation and practice - which make admin work, work

Anyone who has ever worked with photocopiers can tell you that they: 1. are malevolent 2. act with intent 3. display uncanny situational awareness 4. are pack hunters (swear at one, and they'll all turn on you) This doesn't mean they're alive, or conscious.

Halfway through chapter one and about to construct barricades in this Fitzroy North cul-de-sac so I can take to them in defence of the US census.
…think that they understand how the system works-until it breaks. In writing this book, I want to reveal some of what happens in the hope that an informed public can protect democracy's data before it disintegrates.

I’m 1/4 through Chapter 1 of @zephoria.bsky.social’s new ethnography of the US census & I am full-on IN TEARS in my lounge room at 10pm. I’ve aspired to be a “bureaucrat for the revolution” for 25 years & this book is giving my battered old heart words for everything I’ve been striving for
Photo of a page displayed on a Kobo e-reader, saying:

… and yet civil servants dedicate their lives to the pursuit of creating more perfect data. The census cannot ever be truly apolitical given that it is at the heart of the politics of the United States, and yet civil servants never stop pursuing the ideals of nonpartisanship. The persistent tension between ideals and pragmatics is what makes the administrative state so critical to a healthy democracy.
Civil servants serve the public through their dedication and persistence, despite the challenges of the work. And despite having bosses who want to weaponize them.
I see the Census Bureau's civil servants as heroes-not
because I believe in bureaucracy, but because these workers are committed to the ideal version of the American project. [THIS BIT IS HIGHLIGHTED] Public servants toil in the shadows, making consequential choices with little recognition, only to be attacked for trying to make the system work for the people. Too often, they're blamed for the Kafkaesque nightmare in which they operate, even as politicians and advocates quietly configure what they are able to do. [END HIGHLIGHT]
This book is, in many ways, a love letter to those civil servants and the kind of institution that enables them to rise to the occasion. If we want to escape our death spiral of polarization, we must stop treating bureaucrats as…

A selection of Jane Duncan's My Friend books, now little known. They are all hardbacks, arranged spine on, showing how the colourful drawn illustrations on the original dustjackets wrapped around the spines. The Friends in question are Muriel, Rose, Cousin Emmie, Misses Kindness, the Swallow, Sandy, the Macleans, Annie, My Father, Martha's Aunt, George and Tom, Sashie, the Mrs Millers, the Hungry Generation and from Cairnton. They are not arranged in either publication or chronological order. There's a handful of people that might recognise these and have read them.
