Another milestone for @pomscheme.bsky.social ! This recently published paper describes the methodology behind the official stats on pollinating insects we released in June. Thanks to all the coauthors and especially to @clairecarvell.bsky.social and @drnickisaac.bsky.social.

New data on insect pollinators show a dramatic decline in hoverflies across Great Britain between 2017–2024. 📉 Around one third reduction in abundance & number of hoverfly species recorded as part of @pomscheme.bsky.social www.ceh.ac.uk/press/new-da... 1/ @jncc.bsky.social 🧪

Gutted I cannot attend this in person but hoping to receive the materials & be able to contribute remotely to this really important topic. If you're at #BES2025 & work with long-term population monitoring data, I'd consider this workshop 👍

Still a couple of weeks left to apply for this #PhD. How are pollinating #insects changing in the UK? This project will develop indicators for #pollinators using #citizenscience data. A collaboration between @ukceh.bsky.social, University of Reading and JNCC. tinyurl.com/3ve5szrh

Our new paper in @jappliedecology.bsky.social used models informed by spread in invaded regions to assess the effectiveness of interventions targeting yellow-legged hornet (aka Asian hornet) at its invasion front in Europe. doi.org/10.1111/1365....

Predicting the spatio‐temporal dynamics of biological invasions: Have rapid responses in Europe limited the spread of the yellow‐legged hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax)?
By predicting the extent of a biological invasion in the absence of timely interventions and comparing this to the current distribution of the yellow-legged hornet, we found that management measures ...

How effective are efforts to stop the yellow-legged (Asian) hornet? Despite the UK’s suitable climate and habitat, rapid action has prevented establishment. A new study models its spread in invaded regions to predict spread elsewhere without intervention. www.ceh.ac.uk/press/study-... 🧵 1/
Predicted suitability for Vespa velutina nigrithorax and predicted probability of occupancy for all sites across Germany, The Netherlands, and the UK by 2020 and 10 years following the first introduction based on spread scenarios from France, Italy, and Spain.
