Following quality control checks, a manually operated weather station has been confirmed to have recorded 38.2°C on Thursday the 13th of August, making it the hottest day of 2026. This exceeds the previous maximum temperature of 38.1°C recorded at Kew Gardens on the same day.

I had next week's heatwave down as a more moderate 1990s style one, with temperatures peaking in the low 30s Celsius in the south-east, but very hot air was never going to be far away to the south-east. This morning's runs have really toned it up. The 06Z GFS is the most extreme.

Temperatures have reached 36.7°C at Merryfield, Somerset, provisionally making it the hottest June day on record again for the UK 🥵 Wales has also seen its hottest June day with 35.9°C at Cardiff and Northern Ireland tied with 30.8°C at Castlederg 🌡️

Growing support for 35C to be reached in the south-east of England on Tuesday, maybe even Monday, seriously threatening the June record of 35.6C from 1976. Some runs suggesting that it could get up to 37-38C late in the week as the wind temporarily turns southerly.

The latest ECMWF det. run, a model not known for overdoing max temperature predictions, has 38°C in the London area on Tuesday. If not for 2022’s event the national record for any time of year would be under threat. As it is, the June record could be well exceeded.

The June temperature record has lived a charmed life since 2015, when it was just one day away from being broken. It looks like it may come under serious threat next week. Some model runs look "touch and go" for the record being broken while others have it obliterated with highs of up to 40C.

It's unlikely to be this extreme, but this morning's UKMO model run has insane heat heading up from France in about a week's time. 850hPa temperatures of 24C in the south would support surface temperatures near 40C. ECM has 850s touching 20C, supporting surface high temps of 35C.

Data Notice: NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 updates to end

The National Weather Service's National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Central Operations has announced that the Climate Data Assimilation System (CDAS) will be discontinued in favor of the Conventional Observation Reanalysis ( CORe) effective on or about March 9, 2026.
What this means

Because of this change, PSL will no longer be able to update NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 starting around March 9, 2026, The exact date is pending the discontinuation of CDAS by the National Weather Service.

The historical NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 data will remain available on our site.

We are in the process of identifying other products that may no longer be able to be updated or will require a suitable alternative to CDAS to continue operating.

I presented at the #CLIC2026 conference in Wellington, New Zealand, this Feb - a huge step, I'd previously never been beyond southern France. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Many great talks, great research, Wellington and NZ in general were amazing, the locals were very welcoming.

Tonight's UKMO and GFS 12Z runs have fallen more into line with recent ECMWF operational output, keeping the jet stream further south around day 5-7 and delaying the breakdown of the cold spell. Will be interesting to see how the ECM pans out.

On this day 30 years ago, I woke up to a covering of snow in South Tyneside. It snowed for much of the morning, and in the afternoon it warmed up a bit near the coast with sleet and hail showers with thunder, but inland the showers stayed as snow, with thundersnow at Newcastle.

The @metoffice.gov.uk use weather station observations to reconstruct changes in UK average temperature since 1884. @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social produce the ERA5 reanalysis which reconstructs global weather every hour back to 1950 using a weather forecast model. Their estimates agree. Just sayin'.

Happy October! 🍂 Like other times of year, our planet is heating up this month… but some regions warm faster than others. Arctic amplification especially ramps up in October. Maps show the changes in October temperature over the last 4 decades. Data used from @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social ERA5.
Four global maps showing near-surface air temperature anomalies for the month of October in 1985-1994, 1995-2004, 2005-2014, and 2015-2024. Most all areas are observing long-term warming, which is largest over the Arctic region and Asia. Anomalies are calculated relative to 1951-1980 from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis.

I see that some of Bluesky's algorithms are going the same way as Big Tech's algorithms. I searched for posts on Storm Amy, and the default setting was "Top", and the algorithm promoted posts from between 6 and 24 hours ago, and buried a lot of relevant content from within the last two hours.

September 2025 was the third warmest September on record at 1.47C above preindustrial levels in ERA5, behind only the prior two years (2023 and 2024). With 9 months of the year now in, I estimate 2025 will approximately tie with 2023 for the second warmest year on record at ~1.48C.

According to the ERA5 based Climate Reanalyzer series, after hovering at 3rd-5th warmest in the summer, global temperatures have returned being clearly in the top 3 in September but behind 2023. I expect Copernicus's upcoming bulletin to have 2025 close to 2024. climatereanalyzer.org/clim/t2_dail...
