Very rough maps inspired by the UK Met Office showing the year of the warmest summer on record over various parts of Ireland. These maps are up to 2025 and do not include 2026 yet. The first is of mean daily max temp and the second is mean daily temp. 1995 dominates.

No discernible trend in back to school week improving weather wise in Ireland despite what Irish people say. Likely just a cultural thing of expectation (expectations being higher in summer/August vs early Sep with many going back to work/school).

For interest, the top 10 population-weighted hot days in the UK from HadUK-Grid's maximum temperature data: not including Aug 2026. Weighted value in top-left of plots. Three of June 26's days in the list. Wondering if the extent of heat in August might sneak at day or two into the top 10 as well.

Mount Dillon (Co. Roscommon) had a min temp of 0.4C yesterday 24th August and a max temp of 23.6C. A very high diurnal temp range for Ireland of 23.2C which lands it in the top 10 biggest diurnal temp ranges at an Irish station on record.

Will this be the last NW Europe heatwave of 2026? Based on forecasts for an active MJO to be in phases 6-7 on approach to September, I suspect not. Composites for this behaviour during an El Niño event show significant correlation with ridging over NW Europe; a typically hot pattern.

Away from the north, August is continuing where July left off with exceptional sunny conditions for the south of the UK. Shoeburyness on 91 hrs of sunshine for the month to date with Odiham not far behind. Would be a record sunny August if it continued like this.

Interesting the Met quoted 2 days of 37C in 2026 in the UK. So are we including the discounted Yeovilton figure now? Because if not then it was just one day no?

So with how suspect Charlwood has been and the UK Met are clearly disregarding its past 2 day readings, does that mean it should be disregarded for other times this summer it set the 30C mark. 30th July was another one but they mentioned it for that one.

Cork Airport had its driest, warmest and sunniest of ANY month on record in July 2026. 1.1mm of rain, prev record 4.5mm in May 1991 18.5/18.6C tmean, prev record 18.3C in August 1995 315.1 hrs of sun, prev record 290.4 hrs in May 2025 315.1 hrs is also an Irish national record.

This is pretty crazy. The final KZ sun total for Bournemouth/Hurn was 381.1 hrs in July 2026. That's without any correction applied for CS equivalent. Reminder the national UK monthly sun record was with CS at Eastbourne in July 1911 with 383.9 hrs.

There was another day yesterday with 30C in the UK which makes the total for the month 17 so the second most out of any month on record in the UK with only July 2006 at 18 higher.

A month with 250 hrs of sunshine is quite a rare feat here in Dublin. Only May 2020, May 2025, June 2018 and now July 2026 have achieved that in my lifetime (since 2000). Before June 2018, the last time was May 2000. This is the first time since 1975/1976 that it has happened two years in a row.

Hurn/Bournemouth KZ sun total for July 2026 now on 360.9 hrs as of the 29th. Applying correction gives an estimate around 397 hrs to CS equivalent comfortably beating the all-time UK record monthly sun of 383.9 hrs at Eastbourne from July 1911.

Wow, Cork Airport now sitting on 294.3 hrs of sun for July 2026 beating its sunniest month on record in May 2025 (second year in a row). It only needs 14.0 hrs today and tomorrow to beat the Irish monthly sun total record from July 1955 of 308.2 hrs. Good bit of sun expected...

The gap is closing. 1995 now only has 3 more 30C days than 2026 in the UK. Technically, there is still August, September and even October if records break for more potential 30C days.

Somehow Dublin Airport managed to snag 20.0C within the hour during the afternoon today. This continues its record-breaking streak of 24 consecutive days of 20C or greater. The previous record I'm aware of was 21 days back in July 1989. This is some run for here.

The UK has just recorded its first three week long heatwave on record, based on recent Met Office observations - 21 days at Exeter Airport and Usk beats the record of 17 days at Cambridge in 1976 by 4 days. It has been a notable summer so far, with records continuing to tumble.
Bar chart titled "Longest heatwave duration in the UK per year," showing the longest single heatwave recorded at any UK station each year from 1959 to 2026, in days. Grey bars give each year's value; most sit between 3 and 10 days, with a dashed line marking the 1991–2020 average of 6.8 days. Notable earlier peaks include 17 days in 1976 and 16 in 1997. The final bar, 2026, is highlighted dark red at 21 days - a new record, held jointly by Exeter Airport No. 2 and Usk No. 2. A Theil–Sen trend line rises left to right at 0.67 days per decade, with a shaded 95% confidence band and a Mann–Kendall significance of p < 0.001. A footnote notes that the record begins in 1959 because station coverage is sparse before then, and that heatwave thresholds vary by county from 25 to 28°C - Exeter is 25°C and Usk 26°C - so lower-threshold regions are more likely to set the annual maximum.

July CET is standing at 19.9C to the 9th. There has been two non-calendar months that have achieved a mean temp of 20C before in Central England in 1976 and 1995 but a calendar month has yet to do so. July 2006 is the current record with 19.8C. Can this month beat it?
