Prolly gonna do apple sauce, nothing too fancy. They’re honestly palatable table apples but I also like Granny Smith raw so ymmv.

It’s (crab)apple season and our favorite tree in Joseph Lee Park is absolutely loaded with them. Might be because a black locust started growing right next to it, and that fixes delicious nitrogen into the soil.

Most of my harvestable are perennials: blueberry, strawberry, a bunch of tree fruits. I did plant two jalapeños that are starting to produce. But mostly my yard is ornamentals. Here’s some of what’s in bloom now.

there’s a cosmic, immovable scale to national politics where your inability to get what you want in a sea of hundreds of millions of people is kind of understandable. In local politics you get to see that same disappointing outcome but all because one guy told the city not to do something.

AI Overview
There are two days of the week that naturally contain the word "boobs":
Tues[boobs]day
Thurs[boobs]day
There is also a well-known, classic riddle that asks for the four days of the week that start with the letter "T": Tuesday, Thursday, Today, and Tomorrow

Well I *am* bagging on LaPin. I just push back on that necessarily being a defense of Ferguson. It feels like a race where people are mainly being forced to pick who they would like to vote against rather than who they enthusiastically support. At least that’s a lot of what I’m seeing.

Is that what you see me saying? It’s as much up to a challenger to make a credible case they’re the guy as it is for the incumbent to defend their own record.

On the contrary, I think good marketing is why he’s got it as close as he does. The months of apolitical city booster content to “aww shucks I might just be forced to run [for a 3rd time]” story arc was pretty masterfully done.

In the 54 years from 1970 to 2024, there were 5 months with single digit killings. In the last 17 months, there have been 8. There has never been have consecutive single-digit months until this year. We are currently on the third such month.

According to BPD stats this morning, Baltimore's homicide count is now down more than 71.% from the same time in 2022. Since 1970, there has never been a total below 50 at this point in the year. The previous record low was set in 2025, last year.

So when you see our local media use this "most dangerous cities" ranking later this year, which I imagine they will, just know that the Baltimore they're talking about is a Baltimore that is some mix of 9 to 2 years ago, not today.

Ian Wolfe @ianmwolfe.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
The 2026 CrimeRisk data is seemingly already live over at U.S. News & World Report, and like you'd expect from what happened in the rolling window, the score is better: 9th. But it still suffers from the fact that it is analyzing data from the absolute peak of violence, NOT now.
130
Ian Wolfe @ianmwolfe.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
There's a value to a tool like this, but it gets weird if you try to (mis)use it as a score of the current year, because it does not reflect any data from that year at all, or even the previous year! And for Baltimore in particular, hopefully you can see the issue from this graph
131
Ian Wolfe @ianmwolfe.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
See it turns out that CrimeRisk isn't intended to be a one-year score at all. It's intended to be a more smoothed out, long-view measure, and by design uses a "rolling seven-year database" to achieve this. And FBI data is slow to compile, so that database itself is 2 years behind
