It’s (crab)apple season and our favorite tree in Joseph Lee Park is absolutely loaded with them. Might be because a black locust started growing right next to it, and that fixes delicious nitrogen into the soil.

Most of my harvestable are perennials: blueberry, strawberry, a bunch of tree fruits. I did plant two jalapeños that are starting to produce. But mostly my yard is ornamentals. Here’s some of what’s in bloom now.

I know city schools’ landscape crews are not horticulturists or anything, but I have never seen someone hedge prune a bull thistle.

According to BPD stats this morning, Baltimore's homicide count is now down more than 71.% from the same time in 2022. Since 1970, there has never been a total below 50 at this point in the year. The previous record low was set in 2025, last year.

Based on a comparison of the activity of both accounts, it appears that, in addition to his official account, Bobby LaPin is using an anonymous sock puppet account in Reddit arguments to defend himself and attack his primary opponent. thatsgossip.substack.com/p/captain-bo...

The 2026 CrimeRisk data is seemingly already live over at U.S. News & World Report, and like you'd expect from what happened in the rolling window, the score is better: 9th. But it still suffers from the fact that it is analyzing data from the absolute peak of violence, NOT now.

There's a value to a tool like this, but it gets weird if you try to (mis)use it as a score of the current year, because it does not reflect any data from that year at all, or even the previous year! And for Baltimore in particular, hopefully you can see the issue from this graph

Ian Wolfe @ianmwolfe.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
See it turns out that CrimeRisk isn't intended to be a one-year score at all. It's intended to be a more smoothed out, long-view measure, and by design uses a "rolling seven-year database" to achieve this. And FBI data is slow to compile, so that database itself is 2 years behind

To learn more, I check out AGS' page for CrimeRisk, and luckily they share the methodology of their 2026 model. All looks normal until I get to the data sources: Federal Bureau of Investigation, Uniform Crime Report, 2018- 2024 For a 2026 score?! appliedgeographic.com/wp-content/u...

The intro of each ranking says they are "based on each city's murder and property crime rates per 100,000 people" and the detailed methodology just states that it uses something called "AGS CrimeRisk" and "extensive analysis of several years of crime reports." YearS? Plural? 🤔

Since 2022, homicides in Baltimore - along with most categories of crime - have been declining. In 2025, there were 133 homicides where a year earlier there had been 202. And that was down from 262 in 2023 So how could it be then that in 2025 it was MORE dangerous here? Enter methodology.

So first, the source. They're both citing US News and World Report, just different editions of it. The 2025-26 ranking is where Baltimore was listed in 4th. The city didn't rank in the 2024-25 edition. But if you know the trend of crime in the city, this should make no sense...

Do you remember these news items last year? April 2025: Baltimore no longer in the top 25 most dangerous places in the US July 2025: Baltimore is the 4th most dangerous in the US How is this possible? I'm glad you asked. Spoiler: these rankings aren't what they pretend to be. A thread!

I planted this pepper cultivar ‘Armaggedon’ on a whim this year, thinking maybe I’d get one or two novelty peppers. But it did so well, I have dozens of these 1.3 million scoville things to deal with. I’ve nibbled off a couple of them and they’re hilarious hot. No idea what to do with them.
