Most Canadian experience: opening your garage door to leave for work and there's a moose on the driveway...

These biases stem from how AI works. LLMs do not generate new knowledge. Instead, they predict each word fragment based on enormous collections of preexisting text, prioritizing linguistic fluency. Because datasets often reflect historical and societal biases, AI can reproduce and amplify them. While an AI sentence may be well written and sound confident, it may be factually incorrect and perpetuate stereotypes.

Beyond bias, the risks of AI are not evenly distributed. Privacy is one example. Because generative AI systems can retain user inputs, it is often unclear what information is stored, how it may be used, or how to prevent one’s data from training the AI model. That uncertainty can make sharing sensitive information feel risky. These concerns are reflected in how women use AI. Survey research has found that women are significantly less interested than men in relying on generative AI for personal matters like finances, relationships, or health, suggesting they are more sensitive to entrusting AI to handle deeply personal information.

Every back to school season, I remind parents to not post their children's photos online. The downsides of doing so now include the reality that all photos are scraped by AI. Lots of parents get mad at me every year, but maybe this new ruling will smarten them up!

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

The Post, a truly immoral scumbag tabloid that is simultaneously the most skilled tabloid journalism publication in America in a way that we can all learn from, ran the story, and then it was picked up over the next few days by other right wing outlets making essentially the same “hey this left winger is a rich kid” joke, and then yesterday the story was picked up by the New York Times, which had profiled Gordillo earlier, and once that happened it instantly became acceptable fodder for non-right-wing reporters and pundits. This is a textbook case of how to shepherd a shallow partisan smear into the mainstream news cycle. You may find it distasteful, but you should admire its efficacy. Any competent cutthroat political communicator must be able to replicate this process on demand.

(When I worked at Gawker, we frequently played a similar but less political role in this general process, by writing about stories that the Times was interested in but considered disreputable, which would then allow them to write follow-ups framed as “People are talking about this thing,” which provides them an entry point to feed their readers salacious news while still maintaining an analytical, hands-off pose. Once you understand this dynamic you will see it all the time.)
