Wembury rock pooling today- 2 Babakina anadoni, 8 Spurilla neapolitana, 2 Aeolidiella alderi, 1 Aeolidia filomenae, 1 Rostanga rubra and 3 Elysia viridis. These new species are definitely becoming well established in the Wembury area now.

Yes, that's right. It's an attractive species. Often described as an ancient woodland indicator, but not exclusive to that habitat. It's widespread here in the High Weald.

Yes they love Ginger Lily Hedychium gardnerianum as well - incredible aromatic at dusk and would attract them from miles around - recent photo from Cornwall. Friends once stayed on St Agnes Scilly with this growing in garden - 50 Convolvulus Hawks came in each evening at dusk!

There has been an influx of Convolvulus Hawks Agrius convolvuli in southern England over the last week. Worth checking Nicotiana plants at dusk for these amazing moths. I often grow these flowers especially to attract them - some photos from previous years.

The Max Hooper, Ernie Pollard & Norman Moore experimental hedges at Monks Wood will be 65 yrs old next year. Planted as 1+ km of pure hawthorn in 1963, the aim was to see how long it took them to naturally diversify. They're still mostly hawthorn, but many other species have colonised.

7/10/26 #Cumbria - Today’s find was one of my highlights of the year so far. The Date Waxcap (Hygrocybe spadicea) is one of the UK’s rarest #chegd fungi and one that is notoriously difficult to nail down. Hopefully will come across some better examples next time…

Some rare bumblebees (saltuarius, sushkini, tichenkoi) scattered across northern Eurasia appear from barcodes and morphology to be parts of just one poorly known species. Now this has a newly described sister species in the east Tibetan Plateau, B. hongyuanensis. www.researchgate.net/publication/...
Bumblebee species of the genus Bombus Latreille, 1802, subgenus Megabombus von Dalla Torre, 1880, are re-assessed world-wide with a species-coalescent analysis of COI barcodes. An integrative analysis of this evidence together with morphological characters shows (1) support for the widespread Eurasian species B. consobrinus Dahlbom, 1832 including as synonyms the taxa B. yezoensis Matsumura, 1932, syn.n. (from Japan) and B. przewalskiellus (Skorikov, 1933), syn.n. (from North China); (2) support for B. tichenkoi (Skorikov, 1926) s. l. as a widespread but under-recognised species in Asia that includes as synonyms the taxa B. saltuarius (Skorikov, 1931), syn.n. (from Russia), B. sushkini (Skorikov, 1931) syn.n. (from Central Asia and Mongolia), B. morawitzianus Pittioni, 1939, syn.n. (from Mongolia), B. pseudoligusticus Podbolotskaya, 1988, syn. n. (from Kamchatka), and B. kurilensis Sakagami, 1954 (from the Kuril Islands); and (3) support for B. hongyuanensis Williams, sp.n. as a previously unrecognised vicariant sister-species from the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

It's one of the flea beetles which are a group (Halticini) in the larger leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae). The thick appendages are the enlarged hind femora that enable it to jump (convergent evolution with grasshoppers etc). What you see behind those are the tarsi of the same legs,so only 3 pairs

Dear councils, Are you helping restore 30% of nature by 2030? By cutting verges annually like traditional meadows, and not spraying, 1000s miles could become beautiful wildflower havens, while ensuring driver visibility prioritised. Pic courtesy @plantlifeuk.bsky.social

Tiny worker Common Carder Bee in Grosvenor & Hilbert Park today. Still a good number of these about. Before the rise of winter-active Buff-tailed colonies, Common Carder was the latest species of bumblebee to stay on the wing.

Nice surprise to see @pilning.bsky.social & Jan along the Drift today. Bird-free but the march of the Vestal has cranked up a notch again. The same field margin as the summer produced at least 10 Vestals in the grass & beet. Four of them 👇 @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths

On my way into work today I noticed a cranefly, Tipula confusa, resting on a wall. This is an autumn species (the similar Tipula rufina has a black stripe on the side of the thorax and is more common in spring).

Why must it always be about planting trees, when they managed just fine for 100s of millions of years before people came along? Just let them seed out. Yes, planting does have a role, but so often the underlying subtext is continued human domination of nature. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

George is quite right on this. I discovered via FOI requests that just 5% of all woodland creation grants go to support natural regeneration of trees, and 95% to tree planting. I’ll continue to push DEFRA to fix this. www.theguardian.com/environment/... bsky.app/profile/geor...

Work in progress: Cheiridium museorum. I'm working on some pseudoscorpion drawings based on observations of live animals in the field, photographs & reference specimens. The petri dish contains specimens that were found dead in cobwebs in a church & gives an idea of how small these arachnids are.
An A4 size drawing pad with pencil drawings of six pseudoscorpions on the page, four of which have been gone over in black ink. A grey pigment liner pen is at the top of the page and to the left is a Rotring pencil and a pen eraser. A credit card size measure (marked off in millimetres) lays on the bottom left corner of the pad with a round clear plastic petri dish on top of it. The petri dish contains seven tiny brownish specks.Close up of the sketch pad showing two of the drawings, one in pen, the other in pencil. Also in the photo is the petri dish laying on top of the measure.Close up of the brownish specks in the petri dish that measure barely over 1 mm. They are dead pseudoscorpions with teardrop shaped bodies and little 'arms' that end in claws. These were all found dead in cobwebs on a window ledge in a church.
