This lovely Autumnal Rustic was new for our Norwich garden last night. Not many records around the fine city - and I think the first I have seen in Norfolk. #MuchAdoAboutMothing

Well, things have perked up further. Have just had a European Bee-eater high north 0942, calling - over Brightwell Lakes estate, Martlesham. Got eyes on and sound-recorded.

Enduring a 12h traffic survey in Suffolk today. (The things writers have to do to put bread on the table.) But already buoyed by a pre-dawn Polecat on the A140 roadside in S Norfolk, and a two displaying Woodlarks constantly audible at the survey site.

Always stay alert… Walking past some ivy on a southeast London street. My subconscious discerns a micromoth fizzing. Turns out to be Clepsis dumicolana. Turns out there are a dozen. Relatively recent, ivy-feeding colonist. And new for me.

Presumed Royal Leaf-miner Phyllonorycter pastorella from a friend's house in Norwich yesterday: he lives beside abundant willows. Looks like it might be only the 3rd adult recorded in Norfolk - of a species whose 1st UK record came from Buckingham Palace, hence its common name! #MuchAdoAboutMothing

The UK is loaning £400m to the TFFF, Brazil's pioneering fund to fight deforestation of rainforests. Make of this what you will, but this got go-ahead under Burnham less than two months after he became PM. Under Starmer, it was deemed bad optics to loan £400m for trees ahead of the autumn budget.

The day ahead makes me think back. At 7pm one Sep day 25 years ago, I phoned my girlfriend to admit that I was going to be late for that evening’s dinner party in Brixton. Because, erm, I was watching a Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler on Blakeney Point. I finally reached the dinner party at 2345. Ahem.

I had three hopes for my short Cornish trip (my reward for taking teenagers to Boardmasters): find a Wilson’s Storm-petrel, catch a Striped Hawk-moth & other migrants lepidopterans, and lure a Slender Burnished Brass. A departing gift at dawn today sealed the triumvirate. @migrantmothuk.bsky.social

Norwich garden mothing: hoped last night’s heavy rain (repeat: heavy. rain.) might drop some interest. In the event, despite four traps, everything good was on the outside of the MV: Jersey tiger nfg (not unexpected), saltmarsh plume (2fg), clay triple-lines, Palpita, rush veneer, 5 silver y, 2db.

Norwich garden #mothing. I am starting to think that Marbled Cliver now breeds in my garden: these seven caught over the past two nights, following several in the previous week. Cydia amplana (nfg only last week!) must also have colonised a nearby big oak: here are 8 of the 9 in the past 3 nights

Some decent moths among last night’s Norwich garden trap, inc 3 Cydia amplana (new for garden only last week), another couple of Marbled Clover (surely breeding close to Norwich now, rather than dispersing from Brecks/coast) and an extrovert male Gypsy Moth. #MuchAdoAbourMothing #mothing
