Oh, that’s right. I think even on maps it’s called the PCH. And, yes, they’re all bypasses, but the number means something different. Like, where I grew up, one highway would have a 1, 2, and 4, but I forget what each type meant.

This is actually true of most highway systems in the US. I forget what all the numbers stand for, but I believe the 40* highway is the part of the * that goes around the city. LA is weird and doesn’t seem to follow that, like we don’t just have a 1, but that might not be an interstate highway.

The AMC model is not sustainable for an industry, as it relies on people being able to fund an indie film. Yes, what they’re doing is better than making a movie no one sees, but it’s a plan B at best. And investors don’t put their hopes on plan Bs. So it’ll become even harder to get funding.

I believe the Hollywood film industry just went over a cliff and this is the moment that over 100 years of legacy falls apart. When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox they did not double the amount of theatrical release per year. In fact they didn't increase the number of films at all.

Paid parking at hospitals is a disability tax. I was thinking this as I circled the block for a 3rd time, and it was confirmed as I finally found a spot, then watched the elderly man with a knee brace slowly limp across the street as traffic started coming both ways. He risked his life for $12/hour

I know it’s especially hard when people are working below their rate or even for free. But those are the times when it’s even more important to have your notes at the start. They’re ready for the process at the beginning. After a few passes, they’re preparing to move on to the next project.

Editing is a collaborative process, and we want to help you make the best film possible. But just as you read over your script scene by scene, page by page, and line by line, you need to go into the edit just as critical from the start.

What you should NOT do is have a list of 2-3 things, then 2-3 more, then 2-3 more, then TEN TO FIFTEEN things. Unless something broke, those things were always problems, but now you’re so far into the process, they’re likely harder to address because you’re locked and others are involved.

Your first round of notes should be your longest. Mark every little thing, even if it’s not something the editor can/will address right away, like a sound issue that might need ADR. Trust me, we’ll tell you when something is a later issue. But your first list of notes should be your longest.

Since a lot of friends are producing shorts right now, here’s a tip from me as an editor: Watch the editor’s cut SEVERAL times before giving your editor notes. The first, and maybe even 2nd and 3rd, watch will be “wow, my words have come to life!” And you should revel in that. But then be critical.

Today I mourn past me and everything she endured to get to the point where I finally have the type of support I’ve prayed for for years and I can’t even feel excited because I don’t trust it or understand it. I should be happy and relieved, not bracing for disappointment. That’s a learned response.
