This is one of many reasons why Wilder is my favorite filmmaker. Set the camera, focus on the characters ... and let the actors act. All the "fancy-schmancy" "look at me" directing shots take the audience OUT OF THE STORY. His commitment to story reflects this truth: He was at heart a screenwriter.
