He/they, twenties, neurodivergent. I like writing, singing, rats, fandom (esp. Love Live & Persona), geology, Orna, etc. I post lots of stream-of-consciousness nonsense! Intolerance not tolerated. Chronically homesick for WA. Header by DeathChaos on YT

When Lucy from Compass Books in Dartmouth, Devon, was victim to shoplifting people told her to install CCTV. Instead she put this ancient book thief curse on the wall from the Monastery of San Pedro in Barcelona so book stealers would be consumed by "the flames of hell" with "their members blasted".
A Curse Against Stealers Of Books
For him that
stealth a book from
this place, let it
change into a
serpent in his hand
and rend him.
Let him be struck with
palsy,
& all his members
blasted.
Let him languish in
pain crying aloud for
mercy, & let there be be no surcease to his
agony till he sink to
dissolution.
Let bookworms gnaw
his entrails in token of
the Worm that diets not,
& when at last he
goeth to his final
punishment, let the
flames of
hell consume him
forever & aye.
(Monastery Of San Pedro, Barcelona.)

Congrats to the mineralogical king of planet Earth, the universal SiO₂! Better luck in future years to all the other competitors (asagiite deserves another go after that tooth-clenching 2-vote loss). Thanks for the fun, guys! Looking forward to next year. #MinCup26

It’s an absolute nightmare and I cannot stress enough how unhinged people get about it. As part of my work with the community center I organize with Jewish groups who publicly state they support Palestinian freedom, but people still say they won’t attend functions because it’s a Jewish org.

This is the kind of thing I feel belongs on the internet. Benign little pointless updates. The stuff that nobody really cares about, there's no one to tell irl so you just throw it out into the void. Benign's not quite the right word for it but it's nearly 2 AM so I'll think of the word tomorrow

Widgiemooltha is a 1897 historic town in Western Australia’s goldfields that arose during the gold rush, & was named the aboriginal name for a nearby hill. This pretty purple putnisite crystal was found there. This mineral has a completely unique chemical structure found nowhere else in nature.
This tiny purple putnisite crystal is from the Armstrong Ni Mine, Widgiemooltha, Coolgardie Shire, Western Australia, Australia. It is unique in chemistry and nature, and found nowhere else. From Mindat: https://www.mindat.org/photo-543393.html

Since the minerals, liquids, and gases are well protected from chemical alteration, #quartz inclusions open a window to the past that can help scientists reconstruct the chemical and physical conditions that existed when the rock formed.
This bubble is in liquid inside of a negative crystal which is in a quartz cabochon host. In other words, a two-phase inclusion that happens to be in a negative crystal. (Photos: Wimon Manorotkul)

Reasons to vote #stichtite: -Cool purple and green -Suitable & beautiful carving material -Forms around subduction zones & mid-ocean ridges which are both very interesting -Forms from serpentine which is also very cool -Avenge underdog asagiite's 2-vote-margin loss to quartz in round 1 #MinCup26

Recently, we were at the Baltic Sea and there you can find plenty of agate nodules. Agate is microcrystalline SiO2, a very dense and hard material. Mostly, it's dull grey, but it can look very striking if cut, and you can sometimes find small drusy quartz inclusions. #Quartz #MinCup26

#Vesuvianite is my second fave in the #MinCup26 draw, so no contest today. So varied, so many atoms, such WOW. #Skutterudite is pedestrian in comparison.
Image of the crystal structure of Skutterudite viewed along its c axis. Cobalt, Iron and Nickle positions are represented by blue spheres/polygons (they all sit in the same position and occupy that at some time or another), Arsenic by green spheres. Drawn from entry #9417 in the American mineral databaseImage representing the crystal structure of Vesuvianite - here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, light blue spheres represent calcium atoms and blue spheres represent silicon. there is also some copper, aliuminum, manganese, iron, magnesium and zinc hiding out in the structure (but that's harder to see in this representation). The structure is viewed down it's c axis and drawn in VESTA from #1044 in the American mineral database
