men love to decide that the greatest danger to women comes from the outgroup when it's pretty clear that it's almost universally just men in general that are the danger. i want them to shut up already

It is good to go out and see people. It is bad to go out and spend money. In my book, these two noble truths remain in constant tension with one another.

“Tech is inherently political” is not just about ideology, but about power, too. Yielding technological improvements to the adversary will have predictable outcomes. I’m really worried it will lock in power centralization in a way that will be impossibly hard to reverse. It’s already happening.

Women trying to succeed in Silicon Valley AI and effective altruist spaces are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend sex parties - where people have reported being sexually assaulted, like below. Events like Aella’s “Slutcon,” which is happening again this weekend.

I am disheartened by this as well. I already lost a bunch of followers for agreeing with @tautologer, but it's saddening to see local nerdy women being caricatured as Karen-like outsiders and getting pushed out of the scene. This is exactly why you hear so few concrete, names-attached stories of sexual harrassment and assault. I'm told there is a history of discrediting these because the "slut normalization" thing is top priority and these stories get inconveniently in the way of spreading this ideology.
I got roped into attending last year's Saturday Slutcon party because so many local and out-of-town friends were there (to echo sentiments @tautologer expressed about "slut events becoming central to the larger scenes). Mostly I hung out with people I knew and that was great. But in the course of my 3-ish hours there, there were 2 times my "no" was not accepted by a man I didn't know, and I was physically pushing a huge guy off of me who was rubbing his penis on me, who continued to do it despite my physical force against him, and after I finally wriggled away from him, told him I wanted to dance alone etc., he came back and did it again.
This was scary and bad, but it didn't even cross my mind to report this because one of the other people who didn't accept my "no" earlier in the night was the bartender (an officially sanctioned authority at the event), and I knew the event was organized exclusively by women into CNC (who are vocal about how rapey behavior turns them on), so I figured this sort of thing would just get me laughed at. And anyway, I heard there were a lot of other incidents like it. Later though, someone encouraged me to report this story to the organizers, and despite my embarrassment I did, so *they know* that this and other incidents happened. This is why they cut the Saturday night party this year and created a larger training program for the flirt girls - *because* of things like this last year. Yet the narrative bein…People who haven't been to Slutcon are saying "it's just group therapy," "it's just innocent flirting." But the environment is much like a sex party in that many people are nude, there is making out and sex acts happening out in the open. I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect that every nerdy girl who likes rationalist bloggers or is into EA/AI safety should automatically be comfortable with this! That if she's not, there's something wrong with her, we don't want her in our scenes, etc.
Not to mention, it's explictly an event *for men*, where men are the clients and the "flirt girls" are the product. Last year I overheard an exchange where a man felt "led on" by a flirt girl and was trying to get her punished/kicked out. (A dynamic that seems inevitable in this context!)
Anyway- it does sound like they've upped their consent education a lot this year, are more organized, and that's good! As I've told my friends who are attending: I hope they have fun!
I heard several accounts last year of women who had no problems and really enjoyed the event. That's great!
Just... can we live in reality about this? There are real reasons why male-female sexual dynamics are tricky.
Encouraging autistic men who can't yet read body language to go around asking to see womens' boobs is maybe a bit ill-advised. Maybe not everyone should be/identify as a slut; maybe it's not for everyone.
And yeah, filtering the Bay Area Al safety scene down to only women who are super comfy with this eliminates *most* women - including many of the really smart, nerdy, weird women who've been in the larger scenes for years. What a loss for humanity.
I absolutely understand why people with a minority sexuality would want to create belonging, would want to create spaces for people like themselves. But why do it like this/at this cost?

I wrote a story about love, the kind of love that makes you question if there is perhaps a remote monastic order for lesbians. It is sort of a true story and you can read the rest of it on either of these beautiful websites. schizmet.substack.com/p/amys-prison medium.com/@schizmet/am...
A crude drawing of a house with two large eyes, two legs, and one arm clutching a small person in its hand. There is a sun scribbled next to it and a smoke plume coming from its chimney shaped like a heart. The title at the top reads. "AMY'S PRISON," and the text at the bottom reads "@schizmet" and "CASSIDY G." Love is real. I'd seen it all my life: in the movies, on the radio, how my parents would make up after a fight. One time I saw love getting head behind the McDonald's in Tukwila and it made eye contact with me. Some people go their whole lives without ever recognizing love, they grow old and die lonely. A chosen few are found by love, blind and shaking, wet with the fear of others, wet with their own dreams.
Amy and I had been dating a couple months when she asked me to come over to her place. I'd been over there every other day since we'd met, that wasn't out of the usual, but what threw me off was her backyard. I never thought about it before, we always just went inside and fooled around, so I had to ask if she'd always had the big cage.
Amy sat down on the steps of her porch. “You hate it.”
“No. No,” I said. “I love it. It's just not what I expected.” I have a healthy fear of big cages. It was something I only told my closest friends, but it very rarely comes up outside of zoos.
She rested her forehead on her knees. “You don't love it.” She was crestfallen. I had let one bad experience, something that happened fifteen years ago, color an entire person, a whole relationship.
“No, I do. I do love it.” I sat next to her on the porch. “I love the big cage. On the bus ride over I was hoping you'd have a big cage in the backyard. We used to have one when I was a kid. Big cages are my favorite kind.”
She glanced up at me. “...really?” Her eyes were huge. Freakishly so, but I loved her. I loved her and her huge, freakish eyes.
	“Absolutely.”
She stood up and walked over to the cage, opening the door. “Okay,” she said. “Get in.” She wanted me to prove it to her. My love for her was now tied up in my love for the big cage. At that point there was nothing I wanted less than to see her sad, so I proved it – I proved my love for her.
Amy looked through the bars at me, her eyes empty. She might have even looked through me and at the bars behind me. Or maybe past thos…	The sun was going down now. I looked up as a plane buzzed overhead, then another. Amy was sat on the porch watching me. I don't know how much time had passed, but eventually she spoke. She said, “Dana, baby.”
	“Yes, Amy?”
“Dana, baby. I love you so much.”
	“I love you too, darlin.”
She stood up. “I'll bring you something to eat in the morning, okay?”
“Amy,” I said, “why are you doing this?”
She started back towards the house. “I already told you.”
	“Told me what, Amy?”
She looked back. “That I love you.” And with that she went inside and shut the door.
There you have it. Love is real. I started to go through everything that had led me to that moment. The bus ride over, our first date, that thing at McDonald's – What could I have done differently? Probably nothing. How could anyone see this coming? I don't know. They probably couldn't.
The sun had sank completely and I could see lights blinking on and off in the night sky. There was no use in analyzing, I knew I needed to get out. The cage wasn't mounted to anything, it was just rested on the lawn. I bent down and grasped the bars, lifting carefully as to not let it topple over too hard lest it alert Amy to my leaving. I walked as quickly as I could out towards the street and hopped the first bus I saw back north towards Aurora.
* * *
It was around midnight when I got home. Corey was laid up on the couch with some western playing on the TV. He sat upright and threw an arm over the back of the couch to look at me. “Ayy, how’d it go?”
I put a hand on the wall and started to kick off my sneakers. “Well. She put me in a cage, and then she told me, ‘I love you,’ and went back in the house.”
	“And then what?”
	“I fucked off.”
“Huh,” Corey said. “It wasn’t like a sex thing?”
I walked to the kitchen and sat down at the table. “No? I don’t think so? Everything was so normal for like two months. She was normal.”
Corey got on his knees and rested his elbows on the back of the couch. “First off,” he called out, “no…	He stood and started for the kitchen. “Do you hear yourself?”
“Yes!” I said. “I know! It’s crazy! But I thought she was the one.”
He sat down on the kitchen table and put a hand on my shoulder. “You thought she was the one? This woman that ate all my motherfuckin cereal when you brought her over.”
	“Yeah.”
	“Drank all my orange juice.”
	“Yes.”
He jerked his hand off of me with a wave. “Get the fuck outta here.”
I sat with my elbows braced against my legs, my hands pulling my hair back. “What if I just ruined my whole relationship, man?”
	Corey leaned down. “How?”
“Like, what if she was doing a bit?”
“A bit? What was the bit?” He hopped off the table. “Didn’t your mom used to put you in a cage when you was a kid?”
“I never told her about that.”
	“Dana,” he said.
I looked up at him. “She told me she loves me.”
“Dana, beautiful.” He looked sorry for me. “You can’t go back.”
For weeks the cage was all I thought about but I knew I had to let it go. A couple of months passed and eventually my friends told me to get back out there. Don't let an old relationship define a new one. Move on. So I did. I matched on a dating app with a woman named Rachel and we ended up going to a show the same night. Her eyes were big, but not like Amy's eyes. They were big in a different way, plus her hair was a different color. It was longer, too.
She invited me back to her place – a little rental she had just moved into – and I hate to say it but I think I fell in love with her that night. After a few weeks I even told her as much. She said it back, and all was well. Great, actually. She texted me not long later saying she wanted me to come stay the night so I headed over that evening.
When I got there the sun was beginning to set and Rachel was already on the porch. She ran over, throwing her arms around my waist and said, "Dana! I have something for you!” She reached into my back pocket and took my phone out.
	“Is it... my phone?”
“No!” she said smiling, and sat it down on th…
