this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will
reddit post from a presumably young person who watched sex and the city and couldn’t get over how much people smoked indoors. “wouldn’t everything smell bad?” they asked

the problem isn't even as cool as "the secret service would shoot me," it's more likely "I'd bungle things so badly the building security would arrest me and the secret service would find out about it via an email titled 'fyi: security incident"

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

You don't have an inalienable right to be an antisocial dipshit because you're doomscrolling all day and it makes you feel terrible. There are no qualifiers to this. You are not released from the obligation to try to be decent just because Elon Musk is lighting the world on fire.

Okay, so I have a plan to get everyone on our side. First, we be absolutely as viscerally unpleasant as possible. Next, we downplay any time we get what we want, say it's the bare minimum and so forth. Finally, if anyone gives up and says we win or apologizes, we belittle them.

People don't like being reminded of how impotent we are. The fantasy that withholding votes makes candidates bend to our will feels better than admitting that our only power is to join our tiny little vote with as many people as possible to elect one imperfect person none of us fully support.

Saying you won’t vote for Talarico, who has a very consistent record supporting trans rights, against Paxton, who is actively trying to harm trans people, is the same thing as saying “I am indifferent to what actually happens to trans people” It isn’t principled, virtuous, or logical

“Elon Musk destroyed USAID as a mechanism for killing off as many of the global poor and non-white as he can before they kill him first (as he, insanely, believes)” is not a conspiracy theory. In truth, it’s very hard to conclude anything else.

Do you mean "how can you look back at the last decade and conclude that virtue is something you can build a governing coalition upon"? I do agree that our society needs to emphasize civic virtue, though. I don't really know how, however.

You make a mistake when you demonize Carbon Capture and Storage. It is absolutely necessary that we keep as much CO2 out of our polluted atmosphere as we possibly can. bsky.app/profile/kevi...

CCS is necessary for solving the climate crisis, as CO2 must be removed from the atmosphere eventually. There may be ways to do it non-industrially, such as using seaweed or olivine. However, CCS is a thing that has to be done by governments directly, as there is no immediate profit in it.

Every voter should check their registration status weekly until day they vote. Verify address/age every time. People in the south in 2024 showed up to polling places only to learn their address had been fraudulently changed. Vote early if possible so if you need to correct something you have time.
