Is anyone else finding that journals are asking for shorter and shorter review times? 14 days used to be standard, I think? But I've had a couple say 10 days and now one saying 7? Like, do you want me to do a good (uncompensated) job or not? And is this because they're assuming I'll use AI?

My kingdom for a spellchecker in Microsoft Word that does not trip on every little piece of pinyin and Chinese. I just went through every result of the spell check on the book for the first time since it was a three chapter dissertation. It caught 5 real errors. It thinks there are 1,400.

in case you've never seen it, this is Roger Ebert on The Mummy
There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a "Congo" or an
"Anaconda" comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. "The Mummy" is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.

One of my concerns with college Admissions readers judging students' essays in the era of AI is that I don't trust adults to be better readers than teenagers, i.e., to see the ways AI writing can be syntactically pleasing but devoid of signs of deeper thinking.
