one of my most sacred & cringe book release rituals is to buy something that matches the cover and honestly i crushed it this time

Is anyone else finding that journals are asking for shorter and shorter review times? 14 days used to be standard, I think? But I've had a couple say 10 days and now one saying 7? Like, do you want me to do a good (uncompensated) job or not? And is this because they're assuming I'll use AI?

My kingdom for a spellchecker in Microsoft Word that does not trip on every little piece of pinyin and Chinese. I just went through every result of the spell check on the book for the first time since it was a three chapter dissertation. It caught 5 real errors. It thinks there are 1,400.

I learned and still learn so much about writing by reading Locus reviews. And I gained knowledge about how this industry works. And it’s a treasure trove for finding out about new spec fic for reading. Just saying.

Still feel strongly that editors sharing details about their authors' plots, even in closed editorial groups, isn't cool. Semi-regular reminder that I will continue not to do that!

The ideas or the words aren't quite there, until suddenly they are, and I'm lit up with the energy of those moments every time. Every single writer I work with has moments of genius. That's not me being goofy. It's just a fact.

I've noticed Amazon's movie trivia and the random facts you see on Microsoft desktop screensavers are now AI-written and say just completely pointless things like "Audiences clapped when this movie was played at a festival" or "This is a mountain that is surely many years old."

We can say there are obstacles, but the Economist is reporting that teachers are simply handing out A's in response to AI-written work. They know better. Teachers know how students write.

I'd be searching for ways to help them reflect far more deeply than I was ever asked to in a pre-AI English class. They'd be gettin' crazy with the metacognition, thinking critically about big-picture structure and itty-bitty word choices.

Phones in bags during classtime; in-class, handwritten exams. For take-home essays, they'd be turning in their drafted work. There'd be in-class celebrations of our worst-written sentences and how we improved them.
