It's kinda a whole learning experience, growing up on the internet. Keep in mind that rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc had a reputation as being the "nice" part of the sci-fi internet of the time. The Trek/Wars/Douglas Adams boards were full of trolls. RATMM didn't fall until the show got cancelled.

So what happens is that A) There was some internet bullying going on. B) Ratliff is a good sport about it and acknowledges that his fanfic is pretty silly stuff that he's working through. C) So as a compromise, the MSTings become popular and he becomes sorta our Ed Wood. Like we defend him

The anti-AI shots in "Sting Of Death" aren't just throwaways. They are mission statements. It's a celebration of "hey remember how human beings used to get together and make real stuff?" CGI looks more real, but there's something about making a floaty plastic bag look kinda like a jellyfish.

What happens at the end of the original run of MST3K? Mike and the bots escape to Earth and... they have an apartment where they sit and watch a bad sci-fi movie and make fun of it It's "The Creeping Eye." One must imagine Mike and the Bots as happy, as Camus would say.

Eventually I started to realize that what made MST3K work was that they loved these bad movies. It was the embrace of the cheesiness that makes it work. It's why those early episodes feature kids sending in their drawings and stuff. It should be a celebration of human creativity.

The first time I wrote for an audience was a MSTing was for a piece of Spider-Gwen fanfic. No not Gwen Stacy. This was 1997/98, before that was a thing, this was Spider-Gwen Stefani. Because "Spiderwebs." I got permission from the writer and I was off to the races and I was MEAN AS HELL.

I spent my teen years on rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc during the Sci-Fi Channel era going "wow I wish could get a job this fun." And I did! I spent a decade doing live sports blogs for The Guardian using the riffing skills I learned from watching MST3K. Congrats to the whole crew!

Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop" was a big hit in 64. It didn't really lead to a big craze but it was enough to put Jamaican music on the map here in the States. It had more influence in the UK (the Beatles dabbled) due to a wide variety of factors
