It's so stupid and pointless

I honestly have been so checked out of the "broader conversations" around technology these days. But I enjoyed this, and the fact that "competing with China" is just one quick line is telling. My general question is: are Americans no longer interested in being a superpower?

so, I went semi-offline for half a day and came back to find four stories any one of which could have been a weeks-long banner headline story in the before times.

working somewhere for 35 years is pretty astounding, but being laid off when most places would be giving you a gold watch has got to be extremely gutting for that person

Hilary Parker @hspter.bsky.social · 08/07/2026

Seeing someone post "I was at Microsoft for 35 years, and yesterday I was laid off" is still just completely mind-scrambling to me. I get it, companies aren't families, companies aren't your friends, but also... wow.

You can create outfits, and then "try on" the outfits virtually. The images aren't half bad. This is a somewhat passable image of me. The feature itself seems completely vibe-coded, the UI is pretty comical. BUT the tech seems quite good to me.

Hilary Parker @hspter.bsky.social · 06/07/2026

Google introduced a new feature in photos where they auto-build a digital closet for you based on your photos (specifically of you wearing the clothes, not anything in your closet). I'm pretty psyched about it and watching closely, and also trying to add new items by taking extensive selfies lol.

A man who publicly was doing something which, when done wrong, can cause graft-vs-host disease, an autoimmune disease which can attack, among other things, your GI tract, now has an autoimmune disease which is attacking his GI tract. What a coincidence.

There's been a bunch of obituaries about Donlyn Lyndon, who was one of the founders of Sea Ranch. None have addressed or even called out his name being... a portmanteau of his last name. Can someone PLEASE speak to this. I need to know.

I saw an article by Joyce Maynard about the ways that people disparaged her, including Maureen Dowd. I went to dig up the article and my jaw has never been more dropped. Like holy shit, is this the world I grew up in?

Why am I not seeing any news or chatter about this whatsoever? I feel like I'm losing my mind with e-commerce these days, there's like an entire ecosystem that is invisible to the normies. Syncing Whatnot and Shopify will save people TONS of time!

I basically got prescribed pedialyte lol. It did help a lot though, I was getting to the point where I was almost passing out when I stood up, like going completely black.

Hilary Parker @hspter.bsky.social · 20/04/2026

I used to have this problem and it was because I was chronically dehydrated. Not sure if that's the case for you, but something to explore! (I wish living in NYC at the time with those crazy hot radiators in the winter.. ended up opening windows even when it was snowing!)
