I've been covering the death penalty in depth for a dozen years now, and few nights have been as disturbing and dispiriting as tonight. This was a moral, ethical, and legal failure on several different fronts from many different actors. It wasn't *just* SCOTUS, though they sure were a key part.

After SCOTUS allowed Tennessee execution to go ahead, Tennessee botched the execution
SCOTUS, over the liberals’ dissent, cleared the way for Tennessee to kill Christa Pike. The alarming order from DC was followed by even more disturbing developments in Tennessee.

Hey look! Let’s shit on democrats for *checks notes* doing the right thing.
The party-line vote was 53 to 47. While the bill adds more constraints on
lawmaker stock trading than what exists under the current law, all Democrats opposed it, saying it did not go far enough to outright end the practice. Democrats also disapproved of the Republican decision to attach changes to voter ID requirements to the legislation.

FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

Sole female death row inmate to be executed tomorrow; A look back on Christa Pike’s case and a letter she wrote days before her execution
Pike, then 18 years old, killed her Job Corps colleague Colleen Slemmer in 1995. Prosecutors say Pike and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, tortured Slemmer, including cutting a pentagram into her body, before Pike threw a chunk of asphalt at Slemmer’s head, killing her. Prosecutors say the motive was that Pike believed Slemmer was trying to steal her boyfriend.
