This is over the backdrop of Robert S. Duncanson's 1856 painting Remembrances of a Scene Near Auerbach. This painting shows a distant, shadowed ruinous castle at the end of a sharp dropping gorge in the clouded sunlight. Robert Duncanson’s trip to Europe in 1853 probably inspired Remembrances of a Scene near Auerbach. In the distance, a lake disappears into tree-covered mountains, and nestled into the hills sits Auerbach Castle, a German fortress that still exists today. Shafts of sunlight stream through the clouds, illuminating the castle and making it the focal point in the landscape. Like many nineteenth-century American artists, Duncanson was fascinated with Europe’s classical and medieval ruins as aesthetically pleasing markers of the passage of time and its effect on the landscape. i believe this passage of time and the ruins is an important aspect of the story.

The Pilgrim of the World at the End of His Journey by Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole died before he was able to complete his final group of paintings, titled The Cross and the World. In the beginning of the series, two young men each begin a pilgrimage---one to the cross and the other through the world. The route to the cross is mountainous and difficult, while the pathway through the world tempts with a beautiful valley. By the end of their journeys, the pilgrim of the cross discovers the bright light and angels of redemption, but the pilgrim of the world finds only a wasteland of emptiness and fear. Cole used very little color in these paintings to emphasize the vivid contrast between the glorious light of God and the dark confusion of a world without faith.

The Text Reads: For these fields, the ground fought them, it claimed their sons, their slaves, their hungry nights. Yet they persisted as men so often must. With blood and years they tore the ground and ate of its flesh. From the cold stones they raised monuments to their new gods and whispered around them beneath the darkening skies.

If you’re a woman, you’re probably intimately familiar with this predicament. You are too much simply by being a woman in the world with a brain in your skull and a mouth in your face, and you can make the former twist and form the latter to say all sorts of words that make people squirm, even if you don’t mean to. Even if all you intend is to speak your truth or tell a joke or—swelling full with any of life’s grave injustices—rage at some horror, you will remind those people you are a woman who is taking up space, maybe even entitled to take up space.
And by people, I’m talking about men. Sure, there’s always some woman primed to kneecap you for wearing a skirt that’s too short or too tight, for wanting and reaching for more and more and more. But let’s be real. They’re only foot soldiers, collaborators who hope that by selling out the female faction, they’ll be treated better by those with true power. Nah. Men will shit on these quislings just the same as they will you, given half a chance, once their usefulness expires.
A woman’s usefulness—as an ally, a foe, a muse or fantasy or servant—always expires, because there’s forever some new way that a woman can be not right. The goalposts shift swiftly and without much notice, rarely with any true rationality. One day you are immaculate, the perfect creature, spotless. You cannot be improved upon; change is superfluous, maybe a little greedy to ask for. Freeze, don’t move, put your hands in the air. Stay right as you are.
But you do move, and you do change, because you are not a fucking statue. You are human, you are an animal, even before you are a woman. Change is knit into our existence from the moment one cell cleaves into two, into four, and on and on until hey look here you are, in all your messy, bloody glory, growing and shifting because that is what you are meant to do.
Men know this. They know that change is power. Gregory knew this, which is why he told me I was perfect just the way I was.
I changed anyway.

Gran yelled out from the porch: “George, George, come quick! The devil just rode past the house on a bicycle.”
The devil? Mother had stepped out back to feel if the tablecloth on the line was dry. I left the potato I was peeling in the bowl, hopped up and trotted out toward the front of the house.
The devil, it turned out, looked like a thin man in a long brown jacket, its bottom edge hanging down over the top of his bike’s rear tire so it flicked up like a horse’s tail when it touched, trailing mud up his back. The devil was a tall man, his knees stumping up past the handlebars, making it so he had to keep a sort of bow-armed hold on the handles to avoid them, which on the snowy path that went by Gran’s house and that eventually passed our house too and led to the wharf, had his front tires wobbling like the nose of a dog snuffling in the grass. I watched him fighting to keep the bike steady, waiting for him to topple, until he grew smaller down over the hill and disappeared beyond some bushes.
I went back into the kitchen just as my mother was flapping Gran’s tablecloth over the kitchen table. It whooshed the hair back over my forehead. “Who was it, Danny?” she asked, smoothing out the wrinkles.
“I don’t know,” I said, picking up the small bowl of last fall’s potatoes Father had dug from the corners of the yard that Mother had placed on the chair.
“He had a bike? Probably Quentin Porter, then,” she said when I nodded. “Just moved back.”
“It was one of the strangers,” Gran asserted, shuffling in through the door. She bent low to the cupboard and took out two bread pans, and eventually found the tin of flour where it had always sat next to the stove. “Who in town got babies now? Kendall Grimes? Seems she’s due again. You tell her not to leave none of the little ones by a window this evening, else come morning she’ll have more problems than just not knowing who the fathers are. She won’t know who her little baby is either.”
