Darrow pressed two hands down on the bed, missing my dress by a finger-length. Focus, Casper. "You must not fear me. I have been-I've sworn to protect you, Princess Cassandra."
Prince Casper, my mind corrected as my right eye twitched. My mouth stayed silent. There was an earnest expression on Darrow's face, one that seemed complementary to the rest of his flat, creaseless features. Even his eyelids were flat—no fold in sight. It was a feature I'd only seen on some dwarves, a few humans. His cold eyes, though open and welcoming, could cut a stone. Every glance sent lightning surging through my veins, and I wasn't even a lightning mage like my Father was. I mean, I could perform all types of elemental magic, but I was a fire mage with minor healing capabilities. Very minor. Not like Amber, with her magic hands.
The point was, Darrow was nice to look at. At least he had that going for him. But now I had a guard to contend with. This complicated things.
