i don't think that the friendslop games themselves are a reaction in terms of juice, but their popularity seems to me to be in part driven by their rough edges and that their juice is more specialized. like a correlation between a desire for grass-touching & global destimulation and friendslopping

imo indie juice is way way more tuned in to certain wavelengths. I don't get that a lot w/ corpo games. idk that im a good reference for this tho because i basically gave up playing AAA games LOL i mostly only find indies interesting / worth my time these days.

yea I think I mostly agree. at the risk of sounding generic I think that friendslop stuff is a good example of devs just riffing on what they find fun. like. yeah we're just gonna hang out and the game is more a facilitator to hanging out and creating yummy scenarios. Engling, for one, wasn't in it for the money. He distributed Opentracker as "beerware," an open-source license guided by the notion that anyone who found it useful should buy him a beer, as he half-jokingly explained in a 2007 talk. "I thought: A lot of people are using BitTorrent, so…."

Amid that resurgence, he still sometimes tinkers with Opentracker's code, reenergized by new technical challenges. And just last month, a Spanish anime fan took him out for beers in Berlin to thank him for his contribution to BitTorrent's global infrastructure.

I wanted to switch to VSCodium a few months ago but it looks like Microsoft had locked the c# support to VSC proper :/ It might be different now but Zed basically entirely fit the hole that VSC left (with the exception of Unity support. Works great w/ Godot tho!)
