Saudi Arabia could face the biggest threat to its existence ever. With oil exports shuttered and no money coming in, it will be forced to sell treasuries for liquidity which the US will oppose because it will cause yields to spike. Thus, they could be pushed into a balance of payments crisis.

A lot of people really have no idea what's coming with the energy crisis in the coming months. A lot of the crisis from the start of the war were postponed but those tricks can no longer work. We're about to see the worst energy crisis in 50 years.
Screenshot of an X post by The Hormuz Letter (@HormuzLetter) reporting breaking news about Saudi oil exports.
The post reads:
"BREAKING: Saudi Arabia has informed its European customers that late-September crude oil cargoes will be cancelled, due to the East-West pipeline being shut after last week's attacks and Yemen's Houthis taking over the entire Red Sea coast, per three sources to Reuters.
Yanbu had five to seven days of crude stocks left for export when the East-West line went down, per industry sources on Saturday, and cancelling late-September cargoes means Riyadh does not expect the line back before they run out. Europe has been taking Saudi crude through Yanbu because Hormuz has been closed since spring. On top of the pipeline, the Houthis appear to have struck the YASREF refinery at that same port this morning."

What this post really crystallised for me is the extent to which the different global conflicts are merging around key chokepoints around the Med, Red Sea, Caspian Sea and Indian Ocean. Global trade has shown remarkable resillience but it gets to the point where there are too many chokepoints.

Total chaos happening is still an underpriced scenario. My worry is: we are continuing with the same policies, yet fundamentally different packaging. That makes it more difficult to spot the problems.

The whole point of the baseline assessment in Year One is precisely to provide a baseline to actually judge 'is this school improving outcomes' versus 'does this school just have a lot of kids who were doing well at aged five and they haven't messed it up by age 11'.

The most annoying claim is that the 'protests' about small boats are happening because politicians are 'ignoring' voters. The government has spent an enormous (and arguably disproportionate) amount of time on the issue and made a huge impact. It is the politicians who are being ignored.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

As with so many responses in the UK towards Farage over the years, the responses to the AfD you get on this site and on more liberal and left-coded spaces of discourse frequently generates a level of panic that engenders the kind of fatalism and paralysis that plays into the Far Right's hands

Poole is the centre of the RNLI; an organisation of those who risk their lives to go out and save others from the sea, not for pay, but for duty and civic goodness. The RNLI is one of the very best things that the UK has ever done. Targeting its centre is abominable and seen as such.

An aspect of Manchester’s history that is often overlooked. The only black person to win the Nobel Prize in Economics, for his work on economic development, was Sir Arthur Lewis who for many years was a Professor at Manchester University.
The city provided a platform for the astonishing group of Black leaders who gathered for the 1945 Pan-African Congress in Chorlton, a key moment in the struggle against British imperialism. It was a political education in Manchester that helped to provide Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana with the tools for decolonisation.

Good. Eleven fire crews 🤦
Police have arrested two boys aged 12 and 13 after a 'large' fire at a Staffordshire beauty spot. It comes as eleven fire engines had been scrambled to Hednesford Hills yesterday afternoon (August 16).

The alarm had been raised at 1.15pm. A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "Officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"The fire was extinguished by eleven fire crews and thankfully nobody was reported injured."

Subsequently the boys, both from Cannock, were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. A spokesperson added: "They remain in custody today."
