Ahhh. Reminds me of China back in the days. Always keeping an eye on the PM2.5 levels and learning to keep a mask handy. Also kept an eye out for the various foreign consulate websites because they had more “accurate” PM2.5 readings. How the tables have changed…

One of the many things that makes the war with Iran hard to end is that it is unclear who is in charge in Iran, and equally unclear what Trump’s latest demand/whim/lunacy/lie will be. Neither side can figure out what the other might actually want, or what it will accept AND abide by afterwards.

Such as the murder of close family members. This is where a proverb comes to mind: 君子报仇,十年不晚 (jūn zǐ bào chóu, shí nián bù wǎn) - A Gentleman's revenge is not late in 10 years. I don’t see longterm enduring peaceful outcome for the new Ayatollah and Trump.

State policy is studied across varying levels of abstraction, ranging from socioeconomic structural forces and historical path dependency to institutional frameworks and group dynamics, and finally to individual agency and psychology. On certain matters, the individual agency may transcend them.

The Chamberlain Network @chamberlainvets.bsky.social · 29/04/2026
Friday marks 60 days since the President reported U.S. hostilities with Iran to Congress. That report started a clock under the War Powers Resolution. To understand why that number matters, start with the Constitution’s design. Read our full explainer: www.chamberlainnetwork.us/reclaiming-c...
A dark green graphic from The Chamberlain Network labeled “Civic Education · April 2026.” Large text reads: “Friday is the 60-day mark in the war with Iran.” Smaller text says: “To understand why that number matters, start here.” A faint map texture appears in the background, with “Swipe to read” at the bottom.A dark green Chamberlain Network slide with large white text “1789.” The headline reads: “The Constitution split the war power. On purpose.” Body text explains that Article I gives Congress the power to declare war, Article II makes the President Commander in Chief, Congress decides whether the country goes to war, and the President directs the war once it has started. A citation at the bottom reads: “Article I, § 8, cl. 11.”A dark green Chamberlain Network slide with a faded historical battlefield image in the background. Text reads: “Why Congress, not the President.” A quote attributed to James Madison, Helvidius No. 4, 1793, says: “Those who are to conduct a war cannot in the nature of things, be proper or safe judges, whether a war ought to be commenced.” Small text at the bottom explains that the framers gave Congress responsibility and authority to decide when to go to war because service members deserved a representative body deliberating on, agreeing to, and taking responsibility for entering war.A dark green Chamberlain Network slide with large white text “1973.” The headline reads: “After Vietnam, Congress codified the framers’ design.” Body text explains that the War Powers Resolution passed over President Nixon’s veto, requiring a two-thirds vote of both chambers, and that every administration since has contested the statute while also operating under it. A citation at the bottom reads: “Pub. L. No. 93-148 · 50 U.S.C. §§ 1541–1548.”

Great article on the lack of consequences for the ultra-wealthy, with a gift link.
Screenshot of a paragraph from the article: "Decades of research in developmental psychology have shown that moral reasoning develops through consequences—not punishment, necessarily, but experiencing the effects of your actions on others, receiving honest feedback, having to accommodate reality as it actually is rather than as you wish it to be. It’s not that the wealthy become evil; it’s that their environment stops teaching them the things that nonwealthy people are forced to learn simply by living in a world that pushes back. When you can buy your way out of any mistake, when you can fire anyone who disagrees with you, when your social circle consists entirely of people who need something from you, the basic mechanism by which humans learn that other people are real goes dark."

I really appreciated the FP live interview, and the nuanced take on the transactional nature of the Trump admin being the sheer naked glee and blatant avarice policy decisions that are oftentimes self-defeating. The upending of norms will be very detrimental to U.S. national interests.
