Despite threats of financial sanctions from the U.S and the Russia’s attempt to only give 2 months extension, 144 nations voted to give a 2nd 4-year term to UNCHR head Volker Turk. What a strange reality when U.S. aligns with Russia, DPRK, Israel, and Argentina… www.reuters.com/world/un-ass...

A insightful leading realist critique of U.S. foreign policy. Past strategies balanced competing factions to form broader & more nuanced approaches, but today policy is unilateral and openly coercive. In a multipolar world, states have far more options. reader.foreignaffairs.com/2026/02/03/t...

Good ep on the reckless use of the unsigned shadow docket. While an astute political tool, it represents a strategic fumble. It not only diminishes the standing of the highest court but also invites suspicions of partisanship in a polarized age, eroding the rule of law through its capricious use.

The latest issue of Foreign Affairs has some of Nye’s posthumously published work. And it is a provocative piece that talks about the decline of U.S. hegemony may “not be a mere dip but a plunge” due to Trump’s actions.

WSJ’s offense on MAGA, given market downturns, by pillorying it for communist inspirations? Gramsci, it’s been a while since I’ve heard that name. Given that he was part of the neo-Marxist wave that talked about cultural hegemony and institutions, I can see where they make the link.

Meet MAGA's Favorite Communist
Conservative activists like Christopher Rufo are taking inspiration from Antonio Gramsci, the 20th-century Marxist thinker who drew up a battle plan for winning culture wars.

Christopher Rufo is perhaps the most potent conservative activist in the
U.S. Last year, he led the campaign that pressured Harvard University into replacing Claudine Gay as its president. His crusades against critical race theory and DEI in higher education have shaped President Trump's aggressive policies toward elite universities like Harvard, which the administration targeted this week with a $2.26 billion funding freeze.
For the past year, Rufo has been working on a book called "How the Regime Rules," which he describes as a "manifesto for the New Right." At its core is a surprising inspiration: the Italian Communist thinker Antonio Gramsci, a…

The reality (vis-à-vis Reddit).
The real fun begins in 3 weeks. Since container ship traffic lags behind actual time by about 3 weeks all those shipments that left China since yesterday have 125% tariff. So in 3 weeks business owners will get a notice to pay 125% of their original order to clear the shipment through customs.
At that point it is pretty damn clear that business owners are facing increased cost that must be passed on to the consumers. I expect to see calls for impeachment over it. And it is all for naught.
The US makes up 3% of China's GDP. They could easily live without us. The notion they need us has been proven wrong since the last time Trump pulled the tariffs card. China simply found new trading partners. The GDP only measures hard goods. Services like payments for facebook ads and payments to American consultants. If it were measured by the GDP there would not be much trade deficit.

Flip side of passive index investing (from Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel). The incredible bull run of U.S. equities & indices are predicated upon a U.S. hegemonic paradigm, (relative) championing of the liberal international order, & the world’s reserve currency. Rebalance your portfolio.
Take stocks. If you were born in 1970, the S&P 500 increased almost
10-fold, adjusted for inflation, during your teens and 20s. That's an amazing return. If you were born in 1950, the market went literally nowhere in your teens and 20s adjusted for inflation. Two groups of people, separated by chance of their birth year, go through life with a completely different view on how the stock market works:

Larry Ellison of Oracle is now invited to speak.
He starts by saying to Trump: "We couldn't do this without you."
Ellison says Al holds incredible promise. He adds that data centres are already under construction in Texas and each building is half a million square feet.
He goes on to say that there are 10 buildings, but that will expand to 20 and other locations will be added.
Ellison says the applications they are building will help with maintaining and reviewing electronic health rerecords to improve healthcare.

I’m starting to think biotech wouldn’t be a bad option. But I think that’s just the money talking. It is rather disappointing to see promising gene therapeutics gone unused because of its exorbitant pricing even if that ends up being better for the shareholder. There has to be a better model.

Materials and Methods: TMI…
The materials and methods section:

“2. Materials and methods
In order to procure the necessary raw materials for knife production, one of us (M.I.E.) went on a diet with high protein and fatty acids, which is consistent with an arctic diet, for eight days (Binford,
2012; Fumagalli et al., 2015) (Table S1).
The Inuit do not only eat meat from maritime and terrestrial animals (Arendt,
2010; Zutter, 2009), and there were three instances during the eight-day diet that M.I.E. ate fruit, vegetables, or carbohydrates (Table S1).
Raw material collection did not begin until day four, and then proceeded regularly for the next five days (Table S1).
Fecal samples were formed into knives using ceramic molds, "knife molds" (Figs.
S1-S2), or molded by hand, "hand-shaped knives" (Fig. S3). All fecal samples”
