Schools will never be able to ameliorate all social inequalities, but this gives a great window into how a staff body can empower itself in a way that imbues agency into communities that are otherwise marginalised. So many teachers and leaders doing selfless work out there, often with no fanfare.

Wide range definitions given for a key educational term by those working in FE / 16-19 education this week, via the EEF Exchange. Education is littered with abstract nouns that are interpreted in various ways. This causes lots of confusion, and leads to very different behaviours in practice.

'If government decision-making at the time had been driven by the best available evidence and not politics, some of the negative impacts on some of our most vulnerable students could have been avoided.' Read the full quote below. @catscutt.bsky.social @alisonpeacock.bsky.social
Statement in light of the latest evidence from the covid inquiry: Module 8 of the Covid Inquiry has confirmed what we first highlighted in May 2020 in our first 'Education in Times of Crisis' report - closing schools to most pupils and then reopening, both without proper planning, had a disproportionate negative impact on the most disadvantaged students. Our reports at the time pointed out that teachers needed training and support to deal with the practical issues of online teaching and managing pupil welfare and safeguarding, supporting grieving and traumatised pupils, and managing their own trauma and stress. If government decision-making at the time had been driven by the best available evidence and not politics, some of the negative impacts on some of our most vulnerable students could have been avoided.

'Avoid generalisations by diagnosing the specific needs of your pupils — what’s true in one setting may not be in another.' Love this. National education discourse is rife with moral panics about national outcomes (attendance, R&R, belonging), but local needs are identified through proximity.
