The messengers generally look down on most scientific inquiry unless it’s a very specific form of applied science. We can’t let these folks divide us; in the end, much of STEM has more in common with the humanities and social sciences than with, e.g., business.

One of my weird beliefs is that way too much of our understanding of social media behaviors got explained as being caused by algorithms instead of by collective social behavior simply because the social media platforms researchers studied were algorithmic and they led with that assumption.

Keynote: Erin Leahey (University of Arizona)
Recognizing, Rewarding, and Promoting Novelty
In this talk, I pose three questions and provide answers based on my collaborative work and the work of my former PhD student, Dr. Jina Lee. How do we recognize original contributions to science? Instead of presuming that the recombination of extant ideas generates new ones, and that novelty is unidimensional, we build on the work of qualitative sociologists to distinguish different types of novelty. How do we reward novelty? We reward it by citing it more, but at least in the natural sciences, women are less likely than men to claim novelty, thereby depressing their citation counts. How do we promote novelty? Although targeted, mission-oriented funding opportunities are critical for steering science into high-priority topic areas, they may be less conducive to novelty relative to unsolicited funding opportunities.

Keynote: Sotaro Shibayama (University of Tokyo)
Heterogeneity and Reproduction of Scientific Novelty
Scientific novelty is unevenly distributed across researchers, yet how such heterogeneity emerges remains elusive. Drawing on my previous work on novelty, I examine early-career training as a key arena in which orientations toward novelty are shaped and transmitted across generations. This talk illustrates how early-career researchers acquire practices such as exploration and risk-taking through mentoring and interactions with senior researchers, with lasting consequences for their capacity to pursue novel work.

I was struck when I corrected data for inflation and population growth. In no way is Trump policy a correction of some overreach. The Biden years were middling for science funding in the 21st century. This is retrenchment to a time before most Americans were born. grant-witness.us/posts/2026-0... 🧪
A line graph titled "Cumulative NSF Funds Awarded Per Capita (2024 dollars) by Day of Fiscal Year" shows inflation-adjusted per-capita NSF funding from October to September. A color-coded legend groups lines by decade from the 1960s through the 2020s. A thick bright red line labeled "2026" runs far below all other years, reaching only about $3–4 per person by mid-June. Year-end labels on the right show FY2024 in teal at the top (around $23 per capita), FY2025 in dark red (around $17), and "1987" in green (around $15). A red dot marks the FY2027 President\'s Budget Request at roughly $11 per capita, with "1973" in gold labeled as the closest historical year-end value. "1969" in brown at the very bottom (around $5) marks the historical year most closely matching FY2026's current pace.

how can we defeat fascism
talkie-1930
Fascism can be defeated by opposing to it a system of social reconstruction which shall be at once more thorough, more logical, and more practical. Faseism is a violent reaction from evils; let the counter-movement be a constructive advance. Faseism preaches the duty of authority; let the answer be the practice of liberty. Fascism inculcates discipline; let the reply be increased self-government. Fascism aims at making the individual subordinate to the state; let the aim be to make the state subordinate to the individual. In a word, let the new policy be to substitute for the old autocratic imperialism a free popular democracy.
