View from Gorham Mountain summit at Acadia. I had asked a worker at the gift shop what her favorite trail was and she didn’t steer me wrong. This was probably my favorite hike of the trip. Fun rock scrambles and a beautiful payoff at the top. ⛰️ #acadia #maine #hiking #nationalparks

6/ The next day, an email popped in my inbox: 'Welcome to the DraftKings VIP Showcase.' I couldn’t believe it. My night of loss chasing was being rewarded. Reading the fine print, I was floored: The more I spent on long-odds wagers, the faster I’d advance through the ranks.

I also experience this, after 16 years of teaching! Something that helps me is Federer’s statistic — something like he won 80% of his matches but only 51% of his points. You don’t have to be perfect every day, you’re playing a long game and it’s the cumulative effect that matters.

Confession: More than 15 years after teaching my first class, and I still get feelings of dread before class. The feelings are similar to how I would feel before track races. Nervousness + knowing it's going to be work+ really concerned with doing well. Similar feelings? How do you deal with it?

Every time I teach Media Literacy, I ask students what they think are the top 3-5 news stories since 2000. I usually have the top 10 but this year it is only 9 because of so little consensus. And yes, for 9, they wrote "prez elections," not any in particular, so I wasn't forcing it to be a catchall.
Screenshot of lecture slide with students top news stories since 2000, with 9/11 and COVID as the top two.

Prestige bias is a major problem in academia: success in academia leads to other unfair advantages. Prestige bias is bigger in fields that are less scientific (eg., art, history). Fields where claims are more testable have lower prestige markers (eg math, physics). kurtishingl.com/files/PTTS_l...
