Case in point: the economist dean who hired me telling me how proud he was to be part of quantitative data analysis on SA in US higher education only to dismantle the actual community-based resources and consent education initiatives I had started to build as soon as it was convenient.

just heard about another religion program being shuttered. schools’ll want to rebuild their programs after the trump era, i bet. they’ll market themselves like, “we’re already reckoning with the trump era with a TT line in religious extremism (US/european). see, we’re *cutting-edge*!” *sigh*

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

A rare 200-tree American chestnut grove in West Virginia may be cleared for data-center development, but the project denies the site is on its land.

I still think reporting is vital if you can muster up the energy to do so and engage in the process. It creates important paper trails that sooner or later might bring some kind of justice. But rarely do they ever result in any support for survivors and accountability of abusers and enablers.

Dr. Anca Wilkening @historianca.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Having both been on both sides of reporting and being reported to about Title IX related cases, this is nothing new. It happens over and over again on all kinds of scales. There rarely ever is true accountability especially not when institutions navigate processes.

Dr. Anca Wilkening @historianca.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
At Harvard, I worked in a Title IX related residential staff role. The same dean who told me upon taking on that role that students having a resource for reporting etc. was deeply important to him later shut down and did not engage in concerns about anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim bias. Go figure.

Back in 2017 I co-organized an event collecting stories of sexual and gender-based misconduct and violence at Yale Divinity School. Several of the submitted stories concerned abusers being able to graduate without penalty etc. despite leadership knowing. Nothing changed. No one really cared.

So... being a German living in the U.S. at this particular time is kind of surreal. Lately, I’ve been listening to a song by Marlo Grosshardt called "Oma." He sings to his grandmother at her grave about the fear of watching history repeat itself, remembering her warning: "Never again is now."

👇 This is necessary reading - about the closing of one particular program, but giving insights into the bigger war on education:
Starting with the last claim first, about “financial return,” closing the department will supposedly save Virginia Tech $121,185 per annum—barely a rounding error in an institutional operating budget of $2.5 billion. The neoliberal university may function like a corporation, but budgets are always moral documents that demonstrate what an institution values. So, if we’re talking about such a small portion (0.004%) of the budget, and yet “financial return on investment” was supposedly a driving factor in the decision, then we have to ask about those institutional values. Or, to put it another way, it’s fair to ask what Virginia Tech received for its $121,185.
