The NYT 100 Best Shows of the 21st century is the perfect opportunity for me to once again share my unbending belief that whoever made the decision to cast Liza Minnelli as Lucille 2 on Arrested Development should be given the Medal of Freedom.

this is a fine piece but i think it's missing a crucial ingredient, and yeah it's a cliché for a millennial to say this on bluesky but whatever: GENDER, and the connection between empire and fetishized depictions of supposedly distinctly masculine virtues.

I learned about this earlier in the year from @djinnandtonic.bsky.social who had both some amazing posts about Minnesota people using similar tactics against ICE and has shirts via www.etsy.com/shop/WideAwa.... They inspired one of my favorite protest posters.
@djinnandtonic.bsky.social-inspired protest sign of the Boston anti-man hunting league sign with ICE at the center instead of SH (slave hunter). It's a bright green circle with magenta letters: ICE in the center, surrounded by 6 letters representing people who have different roles in stopping a kidnapping, one who tries to talk the kidnapper down, 5 to grab the kidnapper if that doesn't work, and an outer circle of 12 people who create a commotion so that the kidnapper can be removed from the situation).

I'm actually not over this, b/c a) imagine you're having an argument with your nephew over his possibly having left the family faith and you can't respond to this letter until you think up a perfect rhyme scheme. b) is this just...a them thing? Or is everyone getting a limerick in the mail

A very Texan care package has arrived in New England ❤️
The contents of a recent package are displayed on Katy’s dark brown wooden coffee table: an H-E-B cinnamon roll scented candle; a box of central market triple ginger wicked thin cookies: two small bags of Cafe Olé coffee grounds; and a white t-shirt that reads “I ❤️ H-E-B”

ok I had to force down a tear with this one reskeeting with alt text
Image of a page in a book with text reading as follows

THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO:

Dr. John Sharpe of London, who in 1957. a decade before physicians in England could legally perform an abortion for any reason other than the health of the woman, took the considerable risk of referring for an abortion a twenty-two-year-old American on her way to India.

Knowing only that she had broken an engagement at home to seek an unknown fate, he said, "You must promise me two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want to do with your life."

Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I say this so long after your death:

I've done the best I could with my life.

This book is for you.

Real talk, all of this right now (in the U.S. anyway) is mostly about the fact that some people eked out the power to say, “no” and some other people lost their entitled minds over it.

I started my PhD program with an eight week old at home, sole income being my doctoral stipend, in a history program, in Knoxville, TN. And every month we got a new book to read to my son, free, mailed to us, so my kid, my kids, grew up in rooms full of books even when I had no money. That's Dolly.
