During the election campaign, PM Takaichi joined Yana in his constituency and appealed to the voters to help "my Yana-chan," emphasizing his proximity to her. You'd think he'd be on resignation-watch by now but, at it stands, Takaichi seemingly hopes to project him (and her newly-formed cabinet).

Always fun when there’s an event that prompts Japanese bureaucrats to plead, “This is unprecedented!” In this case, Toyama city officials were apparently caught inflating their city’s population by creating fake census forms etc. and adding 2000+ nonexistent residents. youtu.be/mvQXbVG9Dlk?...

I really think this is at the core of all this. It is an attack on historiography, but more importantly it is one on history itself. History isn't a thing that happens anyway, like there is a sum of all that's happened in the past and whether we know it or not, it's there, like physics.

Seen on a train in Japan this summer and coming soon to my lecture slides. What drew me in was the invocation of Meiji-era folks to promote ALC's English lessons (and not the offer of ¥¥¥ reward for "significant improvement" :P )! Recognized all of them except for the bespectacled man on top left.
ALC ad with the headline, "English ability: ¥320,000 equivalent reward for significant improvement." In much smaller print in the bottom corner, the ad also invokes Meiji-era Japanese figures like Shibusawa Eiichi and Tsuda Umeko, who "opened up Japan's future with genuine abilities" [presumably in English!].

Ugh: A new Massachusetts poll has a 51-32 lead for a ballot initiative to adopt the top-two “primary” system. This system has been a wreck in California. The majority party frequently risks getting shut out of general elections, so party organizations often pick favorites in primaries to avoid that

Happy to share the AAS Diversity & Equity Committee is sponsoring an @asianstudies.org Digital Dialogues session 8/19 "Academic Job Market 101: Becoming Familiar & Planning Ahead"! I'll introduce fundamentals & what to expect when you're expecting (to graduate)! www.asianstudies.org/jobs-profess...
An announcement with the AAS DIGITAL DIALOGUES logo at the top, with a banner that says "Academic Job Market 101: Becoming Familiar & Planning Ahead" followed by Wednesday, August 19, 2026
11:00am-12:00pm Eastern Time
What sort of timeline does the academic job market operate on? As a graduate student, how can you be strategic about your fields of study? How do you select letter writers? What do job applications actually require? How can you set yourself up for success long before you go on the market? The fundamentals can sometimes feel opaque and intimidating, particularly for those who are in area studies, and particularly in our current moment. This talk, geared towards graduate students and recent PhDs, will be an introduction to the basics of the job market. This session, sponsored by the AAS Diversity and Equity Committee, will help those considering academic careers to become aware of what the market can look like (particularly in North American contexts).

Time will be reserved for Q&A, but please note that this session will not be recorded.

Registration for this webinar is open to AAS Members only. Not an AAS member? Join now.
