I got back on my bike for first time post-partum (didn’t cycle when pregnant either) 12 weeks ago. I’m so proud of this latest ride and the fact I’ve managed to keep showing up given my back, heatwave, phd, work, animals and baby. It may be modest for some but big deal for me!

Thanks to the two chaps in Tunbridge Wells who helped my mum after a nasty fall today, lifting her up and taking her to nearby shop where the lovely owner made her a cup of tea and sat with her for 45 mins until she felt well enough to leave. A reminder that most people are fundamentally kind. 🩷

The 76 mm ZIS-3 gun was presented #OTD in 1941. Marshal Kulik, the head of Soviet artillery, rejected this gun. Its creator Vasily Grabin put it into production anyway. This gamble paid off, as the ZIS-3 became an incredibly successful weapon. #artillery #history #WW2 #WWII

A few years before I got to my cav troop, a Bradley tried to cross a (high) stream and got swept downstream. The vehicle wasn't loaded according to load plan and the dismount panicked and opened the back door. The driver drowned b/c the way out was backed with gear. 1/

Smugness and pride are not becoming BUT: I find it deeply amusing that after all these years with zero engagement, some people in the military history world still have nothing better to do than bitch about me and meanwhile I’ve published a book, grown and birthed a small human and started a PhD.

A thought on UK university funding crisis. Perhaps university authorities, and particularly UUK, should have challenged the fact that UKRI only pay for 80% of research costs, meaning they lose universities money? It is absurd and surely people saw that this was going to be a problem?
