Benjamin Claude Brower, The Colonization of Names: Symbolic Violence and France's Occupation of Algeria. Columbia University Press.Benjamin Claude Brower’s The Colonization of Names: Symbolic Violence and France’s Occupation of Algeria traces how the French state attempted to utilize one of the most quotidian of all things – what people are called – in its effort to manage Algeria and Algerians. Exploring the power and politics of naming, Brower shows how French imperial authorities twisted and transformed Algerian names into forms more easily known, categorized, and tracked by the colonial state. In doing so, he demonstrates how the French disrupted longstanding Algerian traditions and, most horrifically, severed ties between families.

Attending as well to how Algerians navigated and contested the new systems imposed upon them, Brower brilliantly reveals the lived consequences of what Pierre Bourdieu termed “symbolic violence.” Ambitious in scope and nuanced in conceptualization, The Colonization of Names represents a major intervention not only in the historiography of colonial Algeria, but also in our understanding of the relationship between statecraft, personal identity, and the family.Honorable Mention: Karine Sitcharn, Gouverner la jeunesse : De Gaulle et l’ambition impériale (Gallimard).

Boucher Prize: Mélanie Lamotte, By Flesh & Toil: How Sex, Race, and Labor Shaped the Early French Empire. Harvard University Press.
Mélanie Lamotte’s By Flesh & Toil: How Sex, Race, and Labor Shaped the Early French Empire is an ambitious and innovative book that examines how French colonies in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds were connected through legal regimes, racial policies, and the circulation of both people and ideas. Taking a trans-imperial approach, Lamotte identifies the imperial policies, especially those concerning sex and labor, that structured the early modern French Empire.

With its bold geographical scope and sustained consideration of New France, Lower Louisiana, Senegambia, Guyana, Guadeloupe, Madagascar, Isle Bourbon (Réunion), Isle de France (Mauritius), and the French outposts in India, Lamotte offers important new insights into the global dimensions of French colonization. The book is especially successful in pairing this expansive conceptual framework with richly textured archival evidence that centers the experiences of men and women across the colonial world. The committee commends both Professor Lamotte and Harvard University Press for this original and deeply researched first book, which makes a major contribution to the history of French colonialism and to broader histories of race, labor, and law.Honorable Mention: Julia Gaffield, I Have Avenged America: Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Haiti’s Fight for Freedom (Yale University Press).

Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal @emwjournal.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
We hope that lots of you will consider submitting a piece for our upcoming forum on early modern women and generations #EarlyModern
The editors of Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal invite submissions for the Fall 2027/Volume 22.1 Forum on the topic of Early Modern Women and Generations.
In keeping with the Journal’s tradition since its third issue (2008), this Forum will comprise short contributions on a single topic by scholars from a variety of disciplines. For Volume 22.1, we invite contributions on **women and generations in the early modern world**. Papers might include examinations of intergenerational relationships among and between women, how gender shapes the expression of generational knowledge and status, how women preserve and protect the generations ahead of and behind them, how representations of generations are gendered, etc. We particularly encourage submissions that appeal to readers across disciplinary and national boundaries. Articles may cover literature, history, art history, history of science, geography, music, politics, religion, theater, cultural studies, and any region of the early modern world.
At least part of our selection process will be focused on assuring geographical, chronological, and disciplinary diversity across the essays ultimately published in this Forum.
Submissions are due October 1, 2026 and should be 3,500 words including footnotes; essays should follow the EMW Style Guide (www.journals.uchicago.edu/pb-assets/docs/journals/EMW-style-guide-CMOS18-1735857164913.pdf). Contributions will be peer-reviewed.
If you have any questions about whether your proposed forum essay fits the scope of the journal, please contact us at emw@press.uchicago.edu.
Please submit contributions at https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/journals/emw/about.
See Submissions and Instructions for Authors. For article type, select Forum
