‘Culture wars’ can matter deeply
During the French Revolution, women's progress became a potent culture war issue, leading to new constraints.

People outside the DC area might not understand what it is like to have Trump rampaging through our neighborhood like it's his personal playground. The people of SD should think about how they would feel if he decided to take a sledgehammer to Mount Rushmore. He destroys everything he touches.

Time for the six authoritarians on the #SCOTUS to watch Judgment at Nuremberg. The movie makes clear that judges who facilitate crimes can also be held accountable for them

So cool: a few days ago, I got a message from a descendant of the 18th C Bordelais family that was the subject of my 1st book (from 2000!). He sent photos of Victor and Delphin de Lamothe's portraits. It's amazing to see the images of these men I spent so much time reading and writing about.

Trump's trajectory proves my theory of aging. As people grow older, they are like a cup of boiling wine reducing into a sauce. Whatever personality traits they have intensify, becoming more and more pronounced. In his case, narcissism, greed, and cruelty.

I remember when it was a black mark if a circuit court was regularly overturned by #SCOTUS. Doesn't it seem as if SCOTUS should be embarrassed that suddenly they are overturning all the courts all the time? That maybe the lower courts are getting it right and they are the problem?

If Democrats ever take control again, aggressive Supreme Court reform has to be the first priority, or nothing else will matter. We cannot consent to remaining in thrall to a shadowy crew of mullahs who wave through the illegal and unconstitutional actions of an administration of thugs.

Calling Mike Johnson and Stephen Miller--this assessment of Joachim von Ribbentrop applies to you and so many GOP tools: " He was an example of that paradox, a million times repeated--the "totalitarian man" who achieves the longed-for feeling of self-elevation only in a state of total subservience.

MAGA accuses professors of indoctrinating students with "woke" ideas, while they pass laws in red states mandating their warped version of history in the classroom. Maybe it's time for #historians who still enjoy academic freedom to enter the fray and train warriors for truth--which ≠ neutrality.

I assume that if a Democratic president is ever allowed to be elected again they can determine that the high rate of shootings in Texas constitutes a state of emergency that requires sending in the military to confiscate all guns?

For those who think that government should learn from the private sector how to operate like a business, it has--let the corporate overlords control everything, squeeze money out of the operation to enrich the overlords in control, and crush the people who do the actual work.

Least surprising bit of news ever—Trump and Musk’s DOGE mandates have increased red tape, inefficiencies, and costs—because it was never about saving money. DOGE was always about traumatizing the people that Trump and MAGA hate. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

DOGE vowed to make government more ‘efficient’ — but it’s doing the opposite
New procedures and requirements — some implemented in the name of improving operations — are slowing down federal agencies.

It's time to start keeping track of the deaths that Trump and his #DOGEbros are responsible for. According to a global health research at Boston University, cuts to USAID have already results in 300,000 deaths (the majority of them children) and will cause many more before the end of the year.

Great piece in The Triad today by @jvl.bsky.social wondering why so few ICE agents are resigning in light of the agency's increasingly thuggish turn. But he hides the best line in a footnote: "Where does the 'Abolish ICE' movement go to get its apology?" As an academic, I appreciate that!
