it turns out that “optimize for engagement” and “optimize for societal best outcomes” are opposing goals and if you look at the entire history of the tech industry you can see which of those two wins out

This marketing material says PPGZ would have aired on CN in 2007. The Boston Mooninite Panic happened on January 30, 2007. CN/AS president Jim Samples resigned February 9th. Pretty obvious the new boss, Stu Snyder, decided against bringing it in.

The original artist even made a follow-up comic recognizing this!

Four-panel comic.

First panel: Adam Ellis, teary-eyed, in a snowy forest holding a gun, saying "I'm sorry for what I'm about to do..."

Second panel: Ellis standing behind the bottom two panels of the "Let people enjoy things" comic with arms and legs. Ellis says "You've gone mad... I don't have a choice..." and the comic says "Wait! You don't have to do th—"

Third panel: A distant shot of the treetops and scattering birds with the sound effect "BLAM!"

Fourth panel: Ellis standing over the comic's corpse saying "I'm... sorry..."

My impression with 7 was that they went into it being multidisc partway through development and it was a necessity thing, because like 60-70 percent of the game is on disc 1, and disc 2 and 3 feel like overflow, with 3 mostly existing to have disc space for that super long ending cutscene.

LⱯuren @hexmaniacwingy.bsky.social · 6h

Part of me is nostalgic for the ps1 multidisc era of rpgs/the tactile sensation of "insert disc 2" and the feeling of progression/point of no return, but I do have to admit that with the ps1 FFs they never quite got the disc pacing right

..I'll be taking a page out of the late, great, David Lynch's handbook when it comes to answering questions + theories from now on. (4/4)

A screen shot from an interview with the late director David Lynch when he was asked to speak on his statement saying Eraser Head was his most 'spiritual film'.
Interviewer: "Elaborate on that."
David: "No."
