Gold octopus-shaped ornaments from Bronze Age Mycenae, Grave IV, Grave Circle A. Probably sewn onto a funerary garment or shroud some 3,500 years ago. National Archaeological Museum, Athens. 📷 by me #Archaeology
Museum display with gold octopus-shaped ornaments excavated from Grave IV, Grave Circle A, Mycenae, Greece. Each octopus ornament measures 6.8 cm in diameter and has seven arms with suckers, the coiled tips of which create small holes which would enable them to be sewn onto fabric. They were probably sewn onto a funerary garment or shroud. Dated 1,500 BC. National Archaeological Museum Athens

Beautiful and ancient #IceAge art! Small figurine of a horse, realistically sculpted from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. Known as ‘The Little Horse of Lourdes’ it was found in 1886, in a rock fissure in the Espélugues cave, Lourdes, Haute-Pyrénées, France. 📷 by me #Archaeology
Side profile of a small horse statuette carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago, measuring (L) 7.3 cm x (H) 3.5 cm

The horse has been masterfully sculpted with accurate details. The coat is depicted by a series of lines composed of incisions and dots, the mane by slight cross-hatched reliefs, and the eyes, nostrils, and ears flattened on the animal's head are carved as indents. The four legs are incomplete. The surface has a brown shiny patina, which was once likely pale white in colour.

Known as ‘The Little Horse of Lourdes’, it was discovered in 1886 in a rock fissure in the Espélugues cave, Lourdes, Haute-Pyrénées, France. Part of the collections at the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Stunning 2,000 year-old Hellenistic mosaic glass bowl looking like a Starry Night! 💫 Tranlucent dark blue glass with opaque white spirals. From Canosa di Puglia. Landesmuseum Württemberg, Stuttgart, Germany 📷 by me #AncientBlueSky 🏺 #Archaeology
A hemispherical bowl made of mosaic cast glass. Translucent dark blue with opaque white spirals. There is slight corrosion and weathering of the glass. The bowl has been restored. Height: 7.2 cm, diameter: 13.1 cm.

The effect of the museum lighting shining through the blue glass with white swirls brings to mind the painting ‘Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh.

Out now! Read "78 Acts of Liberation: Tarot to Transform Our World" for tidbits of social justice organizing wisdom & history, for spiritual guidance, or both. It's not too late or too soon to go down the path of learning from rebel ancestors and being in community with other changemakers. #tarotsky
Hey! I heard you and the people you care about want to make some change sooner than later! Now that the U.S. presidential election is over, here are 78 other actions besides voting that you can take, informed by decades of social justice organizing, in a brisk digestible format, using Tarot as a mnemonic device to recall useful lessons from history. (Image of book cover for 78 Acts of Liberation: Tarot to Transform Our World by Lane Smith)Acts of Resistance: Set Boundaries. "[T]he Gulabi Gang embodies Emperor energy: protective, fierce, organized, and systematic. The Emperor does not have to be a political ruler, royalty, wealthy, anyone's father, male, masculine, or even an individual person. The power to create safety without hierarchy exists."Acts of Alignment: Measure integrity. "For an example of relating to the Justice card politically, consider the reproductive justice movement, which began in 1994 with a group called the Women of African Descent for Reproductive Justice. They understood that the framework of 'rights' does little to achieve justice for most people, and instead, they focused on justice as accessibility. Control over their own bodies had to mean access to health care, not just the right to have an abortion or to give birth."Acts of Alignment: Prioritize accountability while exercising freedom. "This card demands a lot of trust and faith and a lot of experience at practicing integrity... To dream of liberation in the form of a world without genocide, without borders, without exploitation, without environmental devastation, we have to believe in ourselves and each other and practice holding ourselves and each other accountable to what we hold sacred: our inter-connectedness, our equality, and the beauty in having everybody able to thrive."
