Jahrhunderts, Band: 5

Bandherausgeber:innen Jadwiga Kita-Huber

"Sendak, a close reader of Kleist's language, gives us her blind fury as her blank eye, powerfully suggesting the inhuman malice that moves her; his sprawling Achilles also recalls Penthesilea sprawling after their first meeting. Sendak's fine illustrations ... distill and extend Kleist's text."

Turns out that Germany's boozy Father's Day tradition is actually related to the religious holiday it shares a date with. The Feast of the Ascension, which is 40 days out from Easter Sunday (see Acts 1:3), was celebrated with all-male processions that usually wrapped up at a tavern.
It is not entirely clear how this Christian holiday evolved into the boozy, festive Father’s Day or Men’s Day we know today. However, there are indications that the Father’s Day celebrations, which have been customary for several decades now, may have originated from Ascension Day traditions. Church chronicles reveal that as early as the 17th century, some Ascension Day processions ended in drinking binges.

From this, so-called “ham tours” developed in some major cities—and particularly in the Berlin area—beginning in the 19th century: carriage operators organized excursions to the countryside via horse-drawn carriages. Women were not welcome on these all-male outings. In the 1930s, Father’s Day was then established by wealthy Dutch cigar manufacturers and butchers as a counterpart to the established Mother’s Day.
