Snow Graffiti has started work on the mural at Andy's All Day Breakfast in Ashton-in-Makerfield. This is part of the Public Art Project aimed at improving the street scene (funded by UK Government). We can't wait to see the final result! @wigancouncil.bsky.social @tourguideliverp.bsky.social

Didn't expect to be wowed by Chelmsford but have enjoyed the town trail this evening, learning about Marconi, ballbearings, Roman roads & 19thC feminist Anne Knight. #heritage #HighStreet @chelmsfordessex.bsky.social @chelmsford.gov.uk @chelmsford.guide

As part of the Ashton-in-Makerfield Building Grant Scheme, we are producing a series of blog posts exploring the history of some of the town's shops and pubs. Our first one is about the Brian Boru Club, the oldest Irish pub in Great Britain! You can give it a read at: shorturl.at/3mtpv

We're very pleased to be working with Richmondshire BPT again at the Old Grammar. Great new project to create a Centre for Creativity and Digital Enterprise. That pesky ivy has grown since we were last involved! 🤣Asset transfer in progress. See www.rbptrust.co.uk/Projects/Old.... @richmondside.org
Stone gable of the hall of the Old Grammar with large traceried window; adjacent secondary, older gable with oriel bay window of the former headmaster's office. Ivy, vegetation and heras fencing in the foreground.Small section of the 2-storey stone Old Grammar School building - recess between two gabled bays, with a green painted door and two square windows on the ground floor, and a 6-section gothic-looking window all the way across at first floor. (3 pairs of pointed-arched windows, with stone mullions in between.) This first floor window lighted a large room that used to be the Common Room of the original Victorian Old Grammar School. Ivy growing in the corner, up a drainpipe, as far as the top of the ground floor windows - and dead ivy higher up, suggesting that it has previously been cut back. Snowboards at eaves level, with vegetation growing in the gutter. Photo taken in 2018, when the building has been vacant for 5 years.Small section of the 2-storey stone Old Grammar School building - recess between two gabled bays, with ivy growing in the corner, all the way to the eaves, covering the windows of the first floor Old Common Room. Boarded-up door at ground floor but can’t see windows beside this, as they are covered in ivy. Photo taken in 2025, when the building has been vacant for 12 years. It looks very unloved.

One advantage of being on a very long train (for a very long time) is the ability to photograph the back end of it, from the front! Here the 15.19 from Plymouth crosses Brunel's bridge over the River Plym. #heritage #engineering @railwayarch.bsky.social @gwr.com
Two arches of an iron lattice railway bridge, sailing high over a wide river, with boats in the foreground and buildings on the shore beyond. The portal of the bridge says "I.K. Brunel 1859 Engineer" in large white letters, above the end carriages of a train which is passing over the bridge.

Had to have a coffee in this wonderful coffee shop in Kendal - rude not to when it has such a lovely shopfront! Farrers have been trading here since 1819 (tho the building dates from 1639). Grade 2 listed primarily on account of its historic shop interior. #heritage #HighStreet @ihbc.bsky.social
Bow fronted shopfront, painted black with white Georgian windows and 'Farrer, 'Tea' and 'Coffee' hand-painted in gold lettering on the fascia. Central door with two glazed panels above the midrail with narrow margin lights. Ornamental glazed overlight. Oval hanging sign.

The pigeon holes in Marrakech's city walls were apparently left by the scaffolders. Should make it easy to put up scaff in future, for maintenance. Alternatively, there may have been a dispute with the contractor over making good.... @historictownsvf.bsky.social @archhfund.org.uk @ihbc.bsky.social
The terracotta pink-rendered 12th century historic walls around Marrakech were built of rubble, straw and mud. A series of regular 150mm square holes are now used by nesting birds, but are scaffolding putlogs. Bright blue February sky, with shadows cast by palm trees

The term 'pattern book' concerns me. Whilst exemplars are useful, all older buildings need to be studied & retrofitting considered on an individual basis, together with external factors such as aspect & wind direction. Hope this book builds on Historic England advice & doesn't contradict it.
