the other example here that comes to my mind would be something like Zambian mining (probably better ones, I've just worked on this)-- the need to keep the industry afloat can quickly undercut your ability to use the revenue for anything else

yeah I can see this! but as yakov says I think taxes are the right move here, and the Norwegian case works as an example of why you'd do an SWF over that. more broadly I just worry people want public ownership to do things it can't well amidst market competition

yeah and I think the better arguments here are: -sanders wants to slow/regulate AI too, and an SWF creates perverse incentives there -the us doesn't need any SWF because of dollar hegemony -my understanding is the Norwegian SWF is about avoiding Dutch disease, which isn't really relevant here

I like your focus on projecting as the problem here! in the same way I am roleplaying The Helpful Professor when I'm teaching, certain kinds of character can produce good results-- but the user's assumptions/attachments around that can still be harmful

"generic competence without apparent personality" is also a character, also a personality, I just don't think we can avoid this. I agree entirely on the critiques here of, say, chibified personal assistant agents as mass market products! but I just think this is also all really thorny stuff

this is good analysis-- but I wonder, the more something acts as an agent I think the more interest we have in it having personality-like characteristics. if the character the administrative AI "plays" is more proworker or just prosocial you get different outcomes, presumably

yeah I could see that ("artificial" also does weird work for a thing grown as much as engineered + relies on language as we already developed it); I'm at least as iffy on "intelligence," not because I'm against anthropomorphic language (far from it) but because even in people it bundles too much

And then England – southern England, probably the sleekest landscape in the world. It is difficult when you pass that way, especially when you are peacefully recovering from sea-sickness with the plush cushions of a boat-train carriage under your bum, to believe that anything is really happening anywhere. Earthquakes in Japan, famines in China, revolutions in Mexico? Don’t worry, the milk will be on the doorstep tomorrow morning, the New Statesman will come out on Friday. The industrial towns were far away, a smudge of smoke and misery hidden by the curve of the earth’s surface. Down here it was still the England I had known in my childhood: the railway-cuttings smothered in wild flowers, the deep meadows where the great shining horses browse and meditate, the slow-moving streams bordered by willows, the green bosoms of the elms, the larkspurs in the cottage gardens; and then the huge peaceful wilderness of outer London, the barges on the miry river, the familiar streets, the posters telling of cricket matches and Royal weddings, the men in bowler hats, the pigeons in Trafalgar Square, the red buses, the blue policemen – all sleeping the deep, deep sleep of England, from which I sometimes fear that we shall never wake till we are jerked out of it by the roar of bombs.

it is wild how bad the online shopping experience is with general retailers at this point (Walmart, Amazon). no respect for the customer, dodging ads and fake products and misleading copy, interruptions begging you to pay for a subscription

This is an important critique and I'm going to continue to beat the AP is bad drum but I want to also add that if your "school" cuts hours a day out you're cutting out nonacademic learning too. I cannot even fathom what these "schools" might do to kids in social terms

Social friction is good. When you know you are demanding someone's time and incurring their judgment, you're more likely to work through a problem independently to the best of your abilities. This preparatory work makes the ultimate consultation more valuable to the patient and the practitioner.

I think a lot of the problem here comes down to the heterogeneity of benefits and the homogeneity of costs, but of course since that's a result of the money form itself there has to be room for creative thinking on the other end

yeah it's strange because it seems obvious to me that LLM safety will be a lot more like ecology and politics than engineering away the paperclipper but there is still this continued insistence on trying to produce the perfect single model
